Until just recently Airtran owned all of their DC-9's. Several months ago they sold fifteen of the 9's to a leasing company and are leasing several back until they get the 717's to replace them. The new lessor has broken up a couple of the ones that Airtran did not keep for parts. The rest will probably end up with some new airline or in South America since they have a lot of useful life left. Most of the rest are Stage III and already have the lower cargo compartment smoke detection and fire surpression systems already installed.
