Why Is There A Wall Of Fire Behind This Plane?

Why is there a wall of fire behind this plane? I've never seen this before.

Seriously, since it was taken at an airshow, I suspect the Commemorative Air Force was at the same show and re-enacted a WWII attack using some of their warbirds....

OK, let's try this...

The aircraft facing us is perpendicular to a runway that's being used as the airshow centerline. The runway is some distance behind the aircraft, but appears closer due to depth-of-field aspects of the photo.

If memory serves, the CAF used to re-create the B-24 attack on the Ploesti oil refineries from WWII, and it's the explosions from these (or whatever other event they were recreating) going off along the centerline.

The CAF puts on a great show. The sound of all those radial engines is something that should be experienced.

The Merlins of the P-51s sound pretty good too!  Big grin

I can't wait until the next airshow comes to Hawthorne. The sound of those jets roaring over and rattling my window is a euphoric experience.

It's the 1000-foot wall of fire. It's a bunch of explosions (all controlled), and it's simulated attacks. The ones I've seen (at the Prince George Airshow [BC] in 1994 and 95), involve an A-10 doing flybys and simulated strafings. Then a F-18 comes by and boom, the wall of fire blows! Pretty neat; it's fricken hot!! You feel the heat and the sky is filled with black cloud. Fire trucks go out and douse the grass fires.
