News On Possible Delsey (VG) Airlines Restart

Hi,

This morning, there has been small press conference to inform the press (of course) and some of the employees of Delsey Airlines about the future of Delsey Airlines (VG Airlines).

The possible investor is 'L-Air', a French airline. Since Air France apparently has a monopoly on certain routes out of CDG (or maybe even the whole of France), L-Air would like to use BRU as its base.

L-Air would like to fly to Africa and the Caribbean Islands, mostly to French colonies.

In an interview, somebody (I think one of the Delsey Airlines administrators) said that they are thinking of using the A340 (!). Yup, that's right, so long for the A330...

L-Air would like to commence services out of BRU by early next year (January or February 2003). So, it appears that the Delsey employees will be without a job for at least a couple of months.

But, before L-Air will takeover Delsey Airlines, the administrators will try to find out if L-Air is not in financial trouble itself. If that's the case, the whole plan will probably be cancelled.

Pressclub: no, never heard of L-Air. But they are going to get a financial inspection. And if they really are in a good financial shape, maybe they have a chance?

Don't they have to create a feeder from France? Ok that those are important routes from France, but also from Belgium?

Maybe CDG-BRU-??? flights?

Wait and see...

Do the employees believe this ? Surely after so many failures their confidence must be shattered to the extent that they now see a job in Belgian aviation as an unecessary gamble with their futures ?

What about these peoples pensions/savings ? What will happen when they retire - will they have enough money/savings to retire comfortably ? Would it not be better to find a more secure source of income (i.e. a non-Belgian airline company, or at least one with a more secure record - Lufthansa, Air France) ?

I guess many people have very limited choices as to where they will go in order to secure a job, but I can't see how anyone can trust these new airlines anymore - they don't seem to last very long. Even now, people are talking nervously about Swiss ! Too bad, too bad.

To be honest with you guys, I had never heard from L-Air as well. But of course that doesn't mean anything Big grin It appears to be some sort of low cost airline. Hmmm...low-cost to the Caribbean?

So, let's see if I get the picture: L-Air may aquire some of SQ's A340's, currently owned by Boeing, and use them out of BRU?

That's right. That would be the idea. L-Air is the new name for Aero Lyon which until now, operated DC-10's.

The problem with L-Air may also be their financial situation. I hope these guys know what they're doing??

Well, it says on this site that the airline has signed a deal with ILFC for 3 A330-200s, for delivery by January. The deal was only signed a few weeks ago, so the aircraft won't be new, most likely. So there's a pretty good chance these could actually BE the ex Sabena, ex Delsey A330s.

L.Air would indeed start flights to the French overseas territories from 13 December, but with A330s leased from ILFC. The A340s they initially planned to take from Boeing Aircraft Trading would not be available in time for the launch...

What's the financial situation of this Company? How are they doing? On the investorwebsite they have the code 'OTCBB'... This normally means ('Over the Counter') a bad financial position...

Is there a market for longhaul lowcost flights? I have my doubts... If it was that interesting they Ryanairs of this world had certainly started this already before... On longhaul I learn from the books you must make money with the full fare C Class otherwise you go out soon (Lakers, Citybird, the Geneva initiative 2 years ago, ...).

There is an idea circulating in the French government (coming from Jacques Chirac - French President - himself) to promote low fare flights to and from French "colonies" (DOM-TOM), in order to make it easier (low cost) for the French residents over there to rejoin France (for family or study reason).Those flights would be operated by some companies other than Air France, with the financial help of the French government. They are not what we can call real "low costs" , except for the price of the ticket the pax will have to pay ( the rest will be paid by the tax payers...)

As long as this airlines does not compete "internationaly", as the DOM-TOM are France in fact, and that there is no competition at all to regular flights to those destinations (only charters)...I think France can do what they want "intra muros"... The French government give already subsidy to some third level companies in France, to help for the desenclavement of remote regions (Bretagne, etc...).
