Taiwan has axed the plan for the 3rd runway plan at Taipei CKS international Airport.

The proposed 3rd runway will be south of the airport, where it was used by military air force.

However, due to "strong oppositions from the (rich) locals", the plan has axed. These oppositions asking the authority to build the 3rd runway north of the airport, which is close to a gigantic oil tanks.

All 2 runways at TPE are 23 years old. The runway usually gets a major repair/maintainance for over 20 years. Taiwan plans the major maintainace in 2007. (North Runway received a maintainance once, South receive 0)

The proposed 3rd runway located south of the airport will save less money, and time consuming.

Taiwan's "People's First Party" criticising the locals to block the plan, saying that this will increase the danger of flight safety. If the current 2 runways are not repaired, the runway will not be able to handle mega-jumbo, A380-800, or proposed B747-800X.

Taiwanese authority is unlikely to expand the airport norhtward, due to the gigantic fuel tanks. It might create safety hazards if a plane accidentally fly into the fuel tank.
