Aerolineas Argentinas Questions (A340 Etc.)

Hello,

Does anyone know the exact status of the Aerolineas Argentinas A340-600 order? I am getting conflicting information from everywhere and anywhere.

-- Aircraft order cancelled.
-- 4 A340-600 still on order.
-- Aircraft order cancelled but now looking into B777/A340 aircraft?

Then there are the rumours that the company is (again) on the verge of bankruptcy and that there will not be any new aircraft at all.

Finally, what about the plane based in Madrid? Read somewhere that it will be returned to Argentina?

I am rather  Confused .

BTW, did anyone notice the Aerolineas Argentinas A340-300 flying around in the Airline-Review.com advertising on this site? Here is a screenshot:

I wonder why they chose an AR plane and not something more colourful.

Best Regards,
Jeremiah

The 340-600 Order is still there I think, there where some problems with the Madrid HUB.. I read that the plane was going back to Argentina, Also I read here that they where trying to get Argentina back to Cat 1 so they could increase their flights and possibly start a HUB in Miami to get the hard currency they much need...

I think 747Skipper knows about this.. If you read this.. can you update us on this?

ARGinMIA,

Thanks for your reply. Just wondering if you had anymore information on what exactly was wrong with the plane at the Madrid hub.

BTW, what's the big difference between Cat 1 and Cat 2 etc.?

I read on salvemosaerolineas.com.ar that they had trouble with pilots or something.. But I really thing that it was the pressure from ryanair/Iberia/BA

Been CAT II really sucks.. They don't allow any new flights to the US, you cannot even add new frequencies to the flights you are already doing.. So they have to stay with the 3/week to Miami.. So until they change to CAT 1 we wont see any HUB here or a daily flights like they want to do..

I'm trying to catch the attention of 747skipper.. To see if he can update us on what's going on to that.. !!

The MD is not going back to Argentina. The hub is really profitable, and there are new destinations planned: Tunis, Milan, Viena, Zurich, Frankfurt, AMsterdam, Berlin and Athens.

I read that the order for 4 A 340-600 is still placed.... but Skipper know about this better than we do.

Also Beijing is likely going to be added first half 2003! A long flight from EZE though, I here it will likely operate via Madrid or maybe Auckland!

Heh a literally impossible flight from EZE.

Auckland would be interesting... but MAD more practical.

Nope. It's just a planned destination, that they are likely to start if they get the rights. There was even a rumour about establishing a hub at athens to serve Turkey and Northeastern Afrika. But I don't think Olympic would let Aerolineas do so. They are in talks with the greek government about that too. It would be nice...

Again.. all this is pure talk from Mr. Mata.. half of the things he say are simply out of his imagination.. did you ever heard about ALAS? the alliance he said would start very soon in South America like 6 months ago? what about the code share with Continental that he said he'll get? Also Whats the status on AR debt with IATA???

What you say is true. MAta has a lot of plans for AR. In fact, more plans than what's possible for him to do. But the alliance was really going to happen. It was not possible because of Varig being in Star, and Lan being in Oneworld. And they were the 2 most important airlines in the porposed alliance.

However, then, Mata also spoke about the Madrid hub. And it really happened. I believe him. It's really profitable, so it isn't a very weird idea to expand it.

According to his posts in the Tech Ops forum, he's on vacation right now, so I think it'll be a while before he's able to respond.

Hello,

How is the Aerolineas service from MAD to LON going? To me it really doesn't seem viable particularly when the country is in such economic strife. Anyone know if it is profitable at all....?

SunCEO.

SunCEO

I took the inaugural LGW-MAD flight this summer, the aircraft was virtually empty. However, about 3 weeks later on the return leg, the flight was sold out. So your guess is as good as mine!

On a related note, Iberia's traffic between Argentina and Spain has actually increased by 7% over the year, so obviously there's still a lot of movement going on between Europe and Argentina.

I was in MAD last night, and the AR counter looked mighty busy.

Rgds

Yes.. MAD Hub was doing great.. But I still ready very conflicting info about its future on salvemosaerolineas.com.ar but lately that place has become a war zone for Southern Winds VS. Aerolineas employees

Hey!

Would AR not be better codesharing on an existing flight (IB/JKK)? I mean to base crews and aircraft in a foreign country is quite expensive to say the least. If the additional capacity was required by the spanish carriers couldn't they facilitate it for AR? The link between IB and AR is very strong so I really don't se the point in this service.

Rgds,
SunCEO.

P.S. That flight is MD 80 operated isn't it?

Aerolineas Argentinas is in good shape.

On the subject of fleets, I have heard they are looking at offers for A320/A340 from Airbus and 737/747 from Boeing, and may decide by January.

On the subject of thier planned Miami hub, it is all set and ready to go. Cancun, Punta Cana, and St. Maarten, with plans for Montreal and Toronto later. Plus MIA (and JFK) will go to daily. This is of course, when Cat. II is lifted.

It would be great if AR went with some 744's. It seems as if all emerging countries are going with airbus (not a bad thing mind you) so it would be nice to see some variety and plus the 744 is beautiful.

B747-200 LV-MLP is soon out of it overhaul in Ezeiza. It was seen last weekend with the blue tail, so expect to see the new colours soon. Would they apply the Austral name also?

BTW, regarding AR's health, what is the vibe in Argentina regarding the airline..? What have the papers being saying (if anything) or AR public relations - is there a feeling that things are looking up at AR?

Another brief question: what can I expect to pay (average fare) for EZE-LIM (thinking of visiting Cuzco this Easter - late March/early April), any airline? As far as I could see, fares were not particularly cheap, at around 250 British pounds, after conversion from $$. (I've become used to cheap flights here in the UK...  Insane ).

Are any 'ofertas' likely on this route? Is it worth connecting at some other point to fly with a cheaper airline i.e. LAB?

Rgds/saludos
p.s. i hope the rumours that AR are doing well are true, it sure would be something to cheer about in these depressing times (for Argentina)

Well, first of all, the International fleet wont have the name Austral on the other side.

Picard, you might get a good deal at their web site http://www.aerolineas.com.ar but if not, the fares will be high.....
