Deccan Aviation is hoping to start up a successful Indian no-frills low-cost airline beginning in April 2003.

"If you look at India's population we have a population of 1 billion and we have just 400 commercial flights. The US has one-fourth our population and has 40,000 commercial flights," said CEO Captain GR Gopinath. "Timing is everything - I think it's an idea whose time has come."

The airline's intention will not be to compete with others, but to offer up to 30% lower fares attracting middle-class business travellers.

"We don't have that many subsidiary airports like in Europe and the US... because as it is, in the existing major airports the slots are not fully filled."

"On the one hand you have to be no-frills in terms of making a low-cost airline,

"But in terms of quality and service you have to be absolutely outstanding. That is the key to success."

Here is another artcle about the new airline.

I hope they get regional jets like the CRJ series or the Q-series.

While the intentions seem good, i am afraid they dont look like getting very far with their efforts!

NEPC was the first to try out this low-cost approach with Fokker F27's and they did well. But then they decided to buy out a whole lot of 737-200's and go nation-wide, and then look what happened!
