Redeye Flights And Airline Operations

What happens when a redeye (cross country) flight has a nice 150 kt tailwind from LAX to JFK and makes the journey quickly? Do airlines:

A - Take advantage of the faster speed, arriving at a very early hour?

B - Cut back power for fuel savings to maintain the same groundspeed, saving the airline fuel costs, with the idea that neither equipment nor pax needs to be in NYC at 4 am?

Seriously I could see "B" being chosen.

BTW, interesting to compare redeyes in Australia and the U.S.:

Assuming the flight is not delayed, and it doesn't look like it would be delayed by an immenent weather condition, generally speaking airlines I've worked with opt for "B", to a point- passengers always love hearing "we've arrived early."

As for fares, you really can't compare two flights in two markets, the fare system is significantly more complex than that.

I had my one and only redeye flight in the summer of 1998 from LAx to JFK with United. The flight went really great and we arrived on schedule at JFK, that was about 07:00 AM. What I feel is that airlines probably tend to arrive on schedule and not save a lot of time. I don't think people would like to arrive earlier than the schedule specially knowing that now most of the airports close during the night until lets say 06:00 am. So even if airlines really wanted to arrive earlier the airport wouldn't allow that. Just to end this, in february 2000 I passed some days in London and my flight back from LHR to FAO was at 06:20, I was curious to know what time was the first flight and before ours there was an IB one to Madrid and an AZ to Milan, both left after 06:00 am, so I also think LHR beeing one of the bussiest airports in the world start their day from 06:00 am on.
