I heard that startup Air Nigeria plans to operate a 747, but that its a leased 744 of Singapore Airlines is a surprise to me.

Any info?

I saw this aircraft on thursday still in SIN, with all the doors closed and no maintenance being performed on it. It is still all white with the grey underside, but curiously the winglets are still in SQ colours, just as they were when this same aircraft was leased to Ansett. Does SQ have something against their winglets being repainted?

Anyway, I would not be surprised if due to financial issues the lease is being held up.

Anyone remember African Star Airlines? They also arranged to lease a B747 from Singapore Airlines and paid enough to have the aircraft painted in their colours. Then the cash ran out and the lease cancelled. I have a suspicion the same may well happen with Air Nigeria.

Etihad Girl, You're a great way to fly.

The paint of the winglet probably signifies the aircraft's still SQ's.  Smile

Those winglets on the Ansett 744 were actually of Ansett's colours. Many people thought that it was simply an extension of SQ's colours but really, it wasn't.

SIA seems to be quite unlucky with leasing out older 747s - and too fast and optimistic in repainting them.
African Star is only one example. Another 747-300 was painted in full green/blue colours of "Transinternational Express" in 1998/99, even N-registered!

Agree with Na that SIA's attempts at leasing airplanes seem to be less than smooth. Here's another shot of the Trans International Express B743 . . . and guess what, this same aircraft (formerly 9V-SKH) went on to Cameroon Airlines for yet another very short lease!!

The Cameroon contract is only short term? For how long? The bird is flying for them for more than a year now, and I just saw TV footage last week where it was shown at Lagos flying back distressed beauty queens to London after the muslim atrocities (some call it "protests") in Northern Nigeria.

Last I heard, the lease to Cameroon Airlines was already gone . . . unless someone can confirm if it is still operating for Cameroon Airlines or is now operating for whoever owns it (but still carrying Cameroon colours).

Air Nigeria is supposed to be a joint venture between Nigeria Airways and Airwing Aerospace (UK), and there were indeed rumours that they were getting a 747 from SQ. But there has been much written in the Nigerian press regarding this company lately.

Here are some articles;

Background on the airline - http://www.kwenu.com/nigeria/airways/adeworan_disinfo.htm

Air Nigeria aircraft to arrive soon - http://www.nigeriasyt.com/aa17.htm

SQ denies involvement - http://www.nigeriasyt.com/c18.htm

Call for review of Air Nigeria - http://www.nigeriasyt.com/aa51.htm

It will be a while before Air Nigeria gets off the ground, and I don't think they will be with SQ aircraft as has been rumoured (the rumour put out by Airwing Aerospace mind you).
