Hi,

I am going to Puerto Vallarta in two weeks and was hoping to get any information on the airport. First of all, will I get in trouble by the local authorities for taking pictures at the airport? If permitted, are their any spots in the airport good for photography?

What airlines/ airplanes will I see at PVR?

Rumor has it that it is not a very friendly country for photography. Is this true?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

I don´t think you will have any problems if you take pictures outside the airport, there is a fence near the highway just outside theairport where you can see all aircrafts movements.

Airlines and aircrafts
Aeromexico DC-9 MD-80, etc
Aerolitoral Saab 340
Mexicana F-100 727 A320 757
Allegro 727 MD-80
Aerocalifornia DC-9
Continental 737-800/900 757-200
American MD-80 757
America West 737
USA 3000 A320
North American 757
Air 2000 767
Among others.

Have a nice trip

I couple years ago while in PVR I had no problem taking a few shots from inside the terminal. I wouldn't try it out on the tarmac or any place real secure, however.

You will love it....and depending on what hotel you are in, you can take some pictures of aircraft taking of over the bay.......on the way out make sure you have a window seat on the right hand side of the plane, that will enable you to take pictures as you take off with a view of the city with the coastline in front, an lush vegetation covered mountains behind it.

The airport is pretty much open view, since the main road leaving north of PV circles around it you can take some good pictures, also consider that final approach is right over this road......get the picture?

I assume none of you have had any problems with the local authorities for doing photography?

Thanks for all of the tips. It should be a great trip.

The Mexican Federal Police came down on me pretty hard for taking photos at TIJ a couple of weeks ago. Outside of the airport I had no troubles.

The airport only has 3 jet bridges, all other aircraft arrive on remote stands and you get to the terminal by bus. I've taken pictures before ramp side while going from the aircraft to the bus. Morning sees mainly charter flights and Mexican carriers while in the afternoon you see more U.S. aircraft (Alaska, AmericaWest, American). Also, the ramp is right next to the main highway so you might get some pics across the street. PVR is a great place, you'll have a great time.

If you rent one of those JEEPS just remember to take the gear shift knob and gas cap.. Some one will take them and you will have to fork over $5 bucks each to the rental agancy.. I think this is a scam.. But beware..

If you stay at hotels like the Marriott or the Velas Vallarta, you will have an excellent view of the departing aircraft, since the Velas Vallarta is just meters away from PVR Runway. You can even take excellent pictures from the beach, since the runway ends in the beach.

Have a good one in Vallarta

I will arriving on ATA around 2:50 PM. Does ATA use a gate or do they park on ramp and shuttle you to terminal (they actually start this service on the 20th from Chicago).

Does anyone know the direction which the terminals face? Basically, I want to know if I will be taking pics with the sun to my back at this time of arrival from the terminal windows or ramp. My main intention will be to take pics of Non-US Airlines since I don't get terminal photos of these back home.

If any of you have any other advice on Puerto Vallarta (aviation or non-aviation), I would love to hear it. I have only been out of the country once before (other than crossing over borders). You can email me if you wish @ airguytwo@aol.com.

Thanks again,

Dave

Hmmmmm OK.....the airport is set up as follows.......

The runway is on a East/West arrangement and as mentioned before it ends on the beach (west side of it), the terminal building is on the south side of the runway and obviously the gates face north towards the runway.

The last time I was in Puerto Vallarta, I was ten years old. Christmas 1970; my family and I flew on a charter airline called "American Flyers Airlines," a 727-100 Detroit to Brownsville TX (to refuel), on to PVR. Not much of an airport back then. And the only hotel was the Camino Real, built with money from Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who lived there at the time.

Now the best spot for taking pictures of PVR is the Bay View Grand Suites, cause if you own a penthouse in this huge apartment tower complex, you'll get the best of PVR.

The sister of a friend of mine owns a penthouse in one of the middle towers and he has told me that the view of the airport is amazing. I'd like to go to Bay View Grand and enjoy the spotting of PVR. Another great site for spotting is the Bel Air Hotel golf field.
