hey all sorry bout the L-1011 crap............. Ok anyways my dad just got back from a business trip in New york and as his jet blue flight was taxing to the active runway he saw a DL-1011 taking off. Does anyone have any info on this. He said it was in full color and was headed out towards the atlantic.

One of the following applies :

a) He saw an MD-11
b) He was hallucinating

I think (a) is the most likely.

L-1011!!!???

I highly doubted. I would say it's more likely a Md-11 going to CDG (or whatever)

They're back. Delta Pacific has taken flight. You saw DL1, nonstop JFK-MHV service. Delta has new MHV and VCV hubs now.

It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

DL1 runs JFK-VCV-MHV. The problem with JFK-MHV nonstops is that ALPA is demanding an overhead crew rest seat for the reserve flight engineer and so it makes more sense to do a tech stop for change of crew in VCV.

Maybe you saw one of the sketchy airlines who bought some of the DL L-1011's taking delivery of one or running some wacky charter operation.

I'm actually not entirely sure if anyone purchased the Lockheeds in the first place, but it's a possibility, I guess?

The only other second-hand L1011 still flying in that paintscheme was IMO this one, but it was repainted a couple of months ago:

Bullshit. Delta's L1011's have all been retired. I really hate these topics that state complete nonsense for a fact.

Air Luxor flies into JFK with the L1011, could have been them. Or it could have been one of those 3rd world country gimmic airlines that bought one for charter. Delta does not operate the L1011 anymore (check their website). An MD-11 or 2 is still in the old colors.

Maybe they are still operating the L1011 but didn't put it on the website for security reasons. How do you know they didn't do that, huh? Big grin

Before everyone blows this kid off, is it possible that this particular L-1011 was fresh out of storage and in transit to a new owner?

If this is the case, I highly doubt it would have FULL Delta Titles. Maybe the colors (cheatline, tail widget, etc), but not the titles...

Why did Delta retire the L-1011 anyway. They still had lotsa years left on them. You still have DC9s from 1966 flying with other airlines, and then Delta goes and retires the beautiful L-1011  Crying

Those L1011's had a lot of mx probs in the end (the last revenue flight was delayed 2 hrs cause of a mx prob haha). With only 250 built, certain spare parts might not have been easily available, compared to say a DC9 with almost 1000 built. Also it wasn't becoming economical anymore to fly it.

The L1011s were coming due for heavy checks that were simply not economical to provide when cheaper-to-operate 767-400s were coming available at the same time.

The flight your dad saw was Delta flight 711 from JFK-ATL and it was an aircraft change,. Normally it would've been flown with a 727 but that plane had problems so Delta said "get one of the retired planes to replace it for the day" so they used the L1011.

hahaha...
