Define "busiest" [aircraft movements, air carrier transport movements, number of total pax, number of enplanements, number of O&D pax, number of connecting pax etc.].
Anyway, I believe that ATL hold them all at the moment.

I don't have a website for you, I just printed these out from work. The November stats aren't in from all of the airports but here are the top 25 in total aircraft movements from November 2001 through October 2002. If your looking for the busiest airports in terms of passengers you'll have to look elsewhere, we in the FAA don't care as much about how many people are in the airplanes and those numbers always lag several months behind as they are harder to verify.

Rank Movements Airport
1..... 912513 ORD Chicago O'Hare
2..... 885491 ATL Atlanta Hartsfield
3..... 769493 DFW Dallas/Ft.Worth
4..... 638239 LAX Los Angeles International
5..... 581416 PHX Phoenix Sky Harbor
6..... 501688 MSP Minneapolis/St.Paul

"Total movements" includes trainers that are taking off, circling the field and landing. (And do touch-and-gos count as one movement or two?) So it's slightly warped. There was one 12-month period (Fiscal 1967, maybe) when Opa Locka was #1 in the US by total movements.

Well, an airplane is an airplane. If your at the airport watching the planes, it doesn't matter whether it's a Cessna Skyhawk or a Boeing 777 it still takes up space in the pattern and space on the runway, and if a Skyhawk is landing then all of the 777's in the air still have to wait for that Skyhawk to land and clear the runway before they can land. But if we want to see what it would look like without the local traffic count and pretend that the Skyhawk's doing practice approaches are ghost ships, here are those stats:

Rank Movements Airport
1..... 912513 ORD Chicago O'Hare
2..... 883526 ATL Atlanta Hartsfield
3..... 756905 DFW Dallas/Ft.Worth
4..... 638239 LAX Los Angeles International
5..... 537166 PHX Phoenix Sky Harbor
6..... 501688 MSP Minneapolis/St.Paul
7..... 498510 DEN Denver International
8..... 495475 LAS Las Vegas McCarran
9 .... 488054 DTW Detroit Metro Wayne County
10... 478404 CVG Greater Cincinnati International
11... 468613 PHL Philadelphia International
12... 465765 CLT Charlotte Douglas
13... 460669 IAH Houston George Bush Intercontinental
14... 452423 STL St.Louis Lambert
15... 444163 MIA Miami International
16... 436479 PIT Pittsburgh International
17... 409560 EWR Newark Liberty International
18... 405083 BOS Boston Logan
19... 396282 MEM Memphis International
20... 394416 IAD Washington Dulles
21... 389868 SLC Salt Lake City International
22... 359055 SEA Seattle/Tacoma International
23... 359055 LGA New York Laguardia
24... 351196 SFO San Francisco International
25... 342330 VNY Van Nuys, CA

As you can see, with the loss of the local count Denver Centennial, Phoenix Deer Valley and John Wayne Orange County drop out of the top 25.

The thing I think is pretty amazing is that St.Louis Lambert is a very busy airport but O'Hare is still twice as busy as Lambert.

What's the deal with VNY? That kind of came out of left field didn't it?

Van Nuys is a very busy general aviation airport and has been for several years. For spotters, if you're ever in the LA area, after you go to see the big jets landing on LAX's four widely spaced parallel runways you must go out to Van Nuys and see the orchestrated chaos of VNY on their two tightly spaced parallel runways. It's truly amazing to watch.

Well since were sorta talking about general aviation now I might as well mention that Daytona Beach Int'l airport (KDAB) is crazy thanks to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and all the other flight school based at this airport. I have sat waiting on the taxiway up to 45 minutes before in a line with general aviation planes. That is a site to see. I am surprised this airport isnt in any list for top movements. I heard its in the top 10 based on all aircraft not just commercial.

Getting further off the subject:

Turns out that the parallel runways at Van Nuys are 375-376 feet apart according to the runway-end lat-lons on airnav.com. So according to the table at http://www1.faa.gov/atpubs/ATC/Chp3/atc0308.html
(scroll down a few) that means only single-engines can operate simultaneously on the two runways-- which, far as I can see, includes a takeoff alongside a landing.

Did VNY look legal, by that rule?

Denver Centennial is the 2nd busiest General Aviation airport in the nation after Van Nuys in Los Angeles.

It's quite a good place to do some spotting and you see all sorts of aircraft from small Cessna 172s to nice sleek Gulfstream V business jets.
