Quite the delay for the A330.

Imagine waiting 8hrs in the middle of the night for a flight?? Can't imagine what this crowd of passengers must have felt/thought as the night wore on... The return flight from FRA is also delayed about 8 hrs...

Even weirder, Flt 894 began as a 757 from MCO, which, according to USairways.com took off on time (4:20PM) but landed at 2:35AM (scheduled for 6:35PM arrival).

from usairways.com:

Airport: Philadelphia, PA (PHL) Airport: Frankfurt, GERMANY (FRA)

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Scheduled Time: 7:55pm Scheduled Time: 9:55am+1
Actual Time: 3:50am Actual Time: 5:20pm
Gate: Not Available Gate: Not Available

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aircraft: Airbus A330 Baggage Claim: Not Available
Status: Arrived
Comments: This flight arrived in Frankfurt, GERMANY at 5:20pm. The flight is operating behind schedule because of delays during baggage and cargo loading. The flight is delayed due to aircraft maintenance.

Actually I have to ask: online did it say that the flight was delayed? if you were going by just the flight number perhaps you were confused by the fact that US does a VERY weird thing with their flight numbering: they'll give a domestic flight and an international flight the same flight number, operating the same day.

I learned of this the last time my grandmother went out to PHX about a year ago. As I was helping her check in, I noticed the MHT agent at the ticket counter told her her connecting flight to PHX via PHL would be gate A6. As I was driving home, it dawned on me that at PHL, the A concourse was for internationsl US flights, and I was afraid of her making the great trek over to A concourse.

When I did get home, I went online and checked the flight number, only to see that her flight to PHX was actaully departing B15, and a flight to GTW with the same flight # was departing from gate A6. fortunetly, she went to the right gate.

I beliweve that this is where the confusion comes from

no, if you read what i posted (from usairways.com) -- it shows that the flight did in fact leave the ground 8 hrs late.

Alot of US airlines have thru flites to Int'l destinations. UA operates several E-W trips and vice-versa the same way. So if the inbound is delayed it would not affect the outbound.

I Don't know where I am anymore

FYI there is nothing unusual about the filght originating in MCO as a 757 and changing to an A330 for the over the water segment. Change of gauge is quite normal. I can think of a few UA ones right of the top of my head. 815 ORD-LAX-SYD, ORD-LAX A320, LAX-SYD 744. MIA-IAD-CDG, MIA-IAD 767 IAD-CDG 777.

Apparently, the delay was caused by a minor accident. One A330 bumped into another on pushback @ PHL.

The damage was relatively minor. One plane is out of service until at least Christmas, but probably longer.

While that A330 rests, US is swapping a 767 alternativel on PHL-LGW and CLT-LGW

Given how tight together the A330 gates at PHL are, that doesnt surprise me at all...anyone have an idea of the regs of the involved aircraft????
