I'll be flying this airline in May OAK-LAS-DCA and DCA-PHX-OAK. What should I expect on the flights. The aircraft are 737-300, 737-200 and 757-200. How is the financial situation at the airline, they'll be around in May right?

I had flown America West a while back from Chicago to Phoenix to San Diego and back. I must admit, it wasn't one of my favorite flights. Their planes seem to have a little less legroom compared to the rest. Food was a bag lunch which we had to pick up at the jetway and take inside the plane. Service was good, however, as the FA's were very attentive and polite. I guess I wouldn't mind flying AWest again but would probably look around for other options first.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

This seems to be discussed every two days...here is the basics...#2 in OTP YTD, average baggage handling, food service only on long haul out and to PHX in coach, same seat pitch as everyone else....movies on the 57 and bus for $5, nice FA's, improving airline, wouldn't have recommended them 2 yrs ago, but now they're a safe bet. No frills, but then again who has frills these days! I've flown over 30 segments in the past 1 1/2 yrs and have had 1 canceled flt and maybe 2 or 3 late. Otherwise good service.

I used to work for them so I've flown about 25 segments with this airline. Only 3 delays (2 wx related) and 1 cancellation (wx related). Service is improving with hot meals in coach on the long haul flights (this was started a couple of years ago). Typical middle of the road airline service. Not Midwest Express, but definitely a step above Southwest. Financial situation isn't that great but they're not in danger of folding or going into Ch. 11. You should have an enjoyable trip. Be sure to post a trip report when you get back.

Flew from DEN to PHX and connected on several different trips to SFO, LAX, and SAN. Even got to go in first class once on an A320 DEN-PHX. . .nothing to shout about though. Well, I did have a couple of "morning drinks" and more-than-I-can-eat muffins, breads, fruit, yogurt, coffee and pastries. The 1st Class FA wound up sitting next to me showing me pictures of her recent safari trip in South Africa (via South African Airways). Yes, that was pre 9-11.
I've been on several of their 732s, 733s, 752s, and A320s. Never had a problem on any of their flights. I love connecting through PHX. The Pheonix area is very colorful with the desert, the mini-mountains, the America West Arena, BOB (Bank One Ballpark). . .what a monster. . ., both skylines, and even the "welcoming' art at the end of the runways.
Now, you are flying into DCA. . .that is a whole other story. I love that place, especially when I use to land in those old ATA 727s. . .the hard braking, wow!

Can't say I love 'em, but can't say they're that bad. Flew non-rev on them about a month ago. They're attentive and courteous, like you'd expect from any airline. 737s are a little cramped by comparisson, but the crews are nice and friendly. Too bad they serve mixed nuts as a snack now. Peanuts or pretzels are my thing.
Connecting in PHX isn't hard, and being that you're on all mainline flights, it'll be even easier than mine were. Try the Brick Overn pizza joint in councourse A, it's pretty good. Don't know about LAS, tho.
