Hello everyone,

I really need your help with this.

I've never flown onboard a MD-11 (it's my favourite aircraft) Now I want to make this dream come true. Can you tell which airline flies with the MD-11 out of europe. I live in Hamburg (HAM) and it would be great to fly to the united states. Other destinations are also fine, if there's no US destination available.

The best travel dates are March 31 - April 6

Thanks for your help in advance

Happy New Year
Tobi

Have you looked at LHR-CPH on Varig?

I would not take the LHR-CPH flight, Varig quite often uses the 772.

Have you considered flying KLM or Swiss? Schiphol ain't to far from Hamburg.

You should absolutely fly with Finnair! All long-haul flights definitely with MD-11 and at the same time you could stay a day in beautiful Helsinki! I recommend!  Smile

Happy New Year 2003 too!

What about the KLM and Swiss flights? Which destinations are served with the MD-11?

BTW, how can I book LHR-CPH on Varig. Haven't found that flight yet.

Thanks for your help.

Greetings
Tobi

Thai use M11's into some ports in Europe still. They also had traffic rights on a couple of intra-European sectors at one stage, although am not sure if they still do those legs or not.

Paulianer,

You can book the LHR - CPH flight on Varig's web site UK site. http://www.varig.co.uk

I think KLM, Swiss and Alitalia all use MD-11s from their respective hubs to Miami.

Delta uses the MD-11 out of Europe right now, but only for a couple of more months. Delta routes that use the MD-11 from Europe are as follows:

ATL-LGW, LGW-ATL
ATL-FCO, FCO-ATL
CVG-LGW, LGW-CVG
JFK-CDG, CDG-JFK
CDG-BOM, BOM-CDG

Delta has fifth freedom rights on the flights between BOM and CDG, so you could purchase that ticket alone, without having to have originated in BOM or JFK. I don't know if JAL flies their MD-11s into Europe or not, but if they do, that's a possibility. I know they served FRA in the past. All of the possibilities for you with European airlines have already been stated, those being Finnair, KLM, and Alitalia. Varig and Thai are your last choices ,I think, if none of those work out.

Should be RG8756, Varig used a 777 during the summer months but are currently using the MD-11.

Finnair is your only reliable european option. They only use MD-11's for longhaul, and they have no plans to replace them within the forseeable future. (5+ years)

KLM, Swiss, Delta, World (still the flagship of World's fleet, although it may be harder to find a World flight as they are more a specialized charter) Varig, Finnair, etc....

I had tried NWA DC10, but it was not that impressive. I really wanna try MD11 before they are all turned into freighters. I heard that it is powerful, but just wonder if it would be as noisy as DC10.

If I can choose, I would choose Finnair to try out the MD11.

Why is everyone getting rid of their MD-11's? Their average age is not even 10 years so why get rid of them? The DC-10 was in continuous service for 30+ years so why does the MD-11 get treated like an old plane? Same goes for the F-100. How come companies like AA are retiring their F-100's when again these airplanes are barely a decade old? Look how long the F-28 was around for. Surely there must be a niche for the F-100 somewhere- it is afterall a superior aircraft to the BA-146.
