A330 And A340 Comparison

Hi there-
I would like to know if the Airbus 330 and 340 (200 and 300 series) have the same wing and fuselage length. Similarly. I would like to know what differences they may have other than the obvious fact that the 330 has two engines while the 340 has four. Thanks for your assistance.

There are not necessarily any differences. According to the Airbus website, they differ only in number of engines.

This is nice, since it means the A340 has all the necessary redundancies that an ETOPS aircraft has. This has been a major chip in the Airbus LROPS battle with Boeing, the A340-500 and 600 also meet all the requirements.

The A330-200 is some different than the A330-300. It includes a bigger tail, centreline fuel tanks, stronger wing, and other improvements from the A340-300X. Some of these have been incorporated into the A330-300X.

Thanks, Gigneil. Does this mean that a standard A330-300 is externally the same as a standard A340-300 with the exception of the engines? An A340-200 is externally different from an A330-200? I have a 340-300 model which I would like to convert into a A330-300 simply by changing the engines. Will this be accurate?

If you're simply taking two of the A340's engines off, it will not be accurate because they will be too small to depict an A330's engines. What you could do is take all the engines off, find a company that makes an A330 in the scale of your A340, buy the kit and glue the A330's engines on your A340.

I doubt you'll find a model supplier that sells only aircraft engines.

Are you sure the 330/340 are so redundant as far as LROPS? It seems like equipping a 340 to ETOPS standards would create a weight-penalty. Although the point may become moot:

The A340-300 and A330-300 fuselage dimensions are identical, but I think the A330-200 is shorter than the A340-200.

I have scale 330 engines so I guess the challenge is knowing where to position them on the wing.

The A342 is more like the A343 and A333 than it is like the A332. The A332 is a unique plane, muchly improved.

N79969 - If you find the LROPS section of the Airbus website, (I'd find it but France is really slow right now) you'll see their explanation of their being fully prepared.
