A UAL 747-400 was parked at the gate (Terminal A) between 1-3PM, it left between 2:30-3PM. Anyone have any more info for the visit.

Maybe it was there to pick up the Giants? They need a large plane such as a 747, with all the media, team associates traveling to SFO.

It was a charter for the Giants football team, but I can't remember the destination. Where is their next game?

Regards,

They would need a UA 744 though? The only time i've seen a UA 744 used as a football charter was for the superbowl teams. I've also seen the NWA 742 several times. Interesting to see the difference in aircraft used by each team. Some teams use 757's yet others use 744's. I wonder if a UA 744 will come to PHL when the Eagles play their home playoff games.

Giants face San Francisco on Sunday at 4:30pm in the wild card round of the NFC playoffs.

It may well be the Giants charter, today is their travel day, but normally they use a 757 or 767, even for their Super Bowl in January 2001 it was a 757. Usually the 747 is reserved for members of the organization and players families, and it goes out a few days after the team. Perhaps UA didn't have a 757 available?

It's the playoffs, so the team's contingent is much larger, including personnel, media, and families. On top of that a lot of coaches request to their GM's they have a larger, more comfortable planes for longer flights during the playoffs. Miami comes to mind two years ago when they played on the west coast and Wandstedt (sp?) got a 767-300 instead of a 757.

When the Eagles played the 49ers they flew out to SF on an NW 742...an aircraft of this size for a football charter is thus not unprecedented at all...

If it was the Giant's charter why would they board through a gate at the terminal, usually sports charters are parked away from the terminals and the teams drive up in buses and board via stairs.

Does the new TSA security guidelines mean the players have to go through the screeners in the terminals?. It would have been cool to see Kerry Collins or Tiki Barber in Terminal in line like everyone else.

Hey, I remember the days when players flew commercial with the rest of us. It was nice to see Larry Bird and the rest of the Celtics a few rows in front of me on a Continental MD-80.

STT757: If they were using the main terminal, I would guess that the TSA would search them. I believe anyone entering the sterile part of the terminal has to be screened. Now, they might have put aside a few queues for use only by people going on the charter (kinda like what they do for Elite FFs and those in F).

As for chartering a 744, the flight is a trans-con, and I'm sure Coach Fassil doesn't want his players in economy legroom. The players probably are up in Biz, while management/coaches in First Suite. The media, support personnel, etc. are probably in the back.
