Far Eastern Air Transport and EVA Air are seeking to fly to China direct to carry passengers to and from Taipei for the lunar new year. FAT have been granted permission but EVA plan on flying indirect using an empty 744 to Shanghai and then flying full to Taipei.

According to the BBC, the flights to China still wont be nonstop as per this new exception, but rather just allow the ROC carrier into PRC. PRC has yet to grant a nonstop allowance for any of the ROC carriers... though EVA is applying

It's a big step for both countries' air travel. Hopefully it will lead to direct air links between the two countries one day...and eventual peace. A lot of Chinese want to go visit their families in Taiwan for the Chinese New Year. It's a big deal event.
