JAT Says Farewell To DC-10, DC-9 & B-727

As of April 2003, JAT plans on saying farewell to three different aircraft types. According to the general director, Predrag Vujovic, the airline is in the process of replacing the operational 727s with the newer Boeing 737-400. In addition to the 737-400 delivered last month, at least one more is destined to join the fleet soon.

The decision to retire the DC-9 and Boeing 727 fleet came for several reasons. The first was because of strict European regulations that have now been enforced regarding emission and noise levels. The second reason attributes to the cost of maintenance. Last year to simply keep a handful of these two models in operation cost 9.8 million USD. Since 1992, it was estimated that the airline invested 120 million USD to maintain these two aircraft types. The final reason associated with the decision extends to fuel efficiency.

With regards to the DC-10, Vujovic stated that the airline requires about 2.5 million USD annually to maintain the YU-AMB. Furthermore, since the resumption of transatlantic flights to North America were not realised last year, it was decided that JAT should instead focus on the Euro-Mediterranean market for the time being. Vujovic also confirmed that JAT will not make any new aircraft purchases from short term perspective, and will instead look at either leasing or purchasing used aircraft which have flown less about ten years. Thus JATs fleet will comprise of three different aircraft types (Boeing 737-300, Boeing 737-400, and ATR-72-200).

JAT DC-9-32 History:
- April 1969: the first DC-9-32 landed at Belgrade Airport to join the JAT fleet. This aircraft (I-DIKY) was under lease agreement until the summer of 1970.
- January 1970: the purchase agreement for five DC-9 planes already under construction was singed by JAT General Manager Vidomir Krunić.
- January 1972: a bomb exploded on the JAT DC-9 (YU-AHT) flying over Czechoslovakia. Twenty seven passengers and crew members died, while stewardess Vesna Vulovic survived a fall from an altitude of nearly 10 kilometers and was included in the Guinness Book of Records.
- End of 1973: the last five JAT DC-9s were delivered.

JAT Boeing 727-200 History:
- June 1974: welcome ceremony for the first JAT B-727-200 (YU-AKA) at the Belgrade Airport.
- November 1974: JATs first round-the-world flight, using a B-727 on the route Belgrade-Beirut-Bombay-Singapore-Tokyo-Honolulu-Los Angeles-New York- London-Belgrade.
- December 1981: JATs last two B-727s arrive (YU-AKK and YU-AKL).

JAT DC-10-30 History:
- May 1977: JATs management board approved the purchase of a wide-body aircraft for intercontinental operations. The DC-10 was chosen.
- July 1977 in Long Beach, California, a purchase agreement is signed for JATs first wide-body plane, the DC-10-30.
- September 1978: JATs first DC-10 (YU-AMA) underwent its first test flight at Long Beach California.
- December 1978: JATs first DC-10 (YU-AMA) lands at Belgrade Airport. The aircraft is named in honor of Nikola Tesla.
- May 1979: JATs second DC-10 (YU-AMB) lands at Belgrade Airport. The aircraft is named in honor of Edvard Rusjan.
- February 1996: the overhauled and modernized DC-10 (YU-AMB), renamed after Beograd.

Good choice for JAT to retire these old aircraft types. So what will be JAT's total fleet number after it gets rid of the 727, DC-10 and DC-9? How many 737's in total will they have? I'm amazed that JAT operated these old types for so long. Croatia Airlines has been running a modern fleet for some time now(A319,A320,737,ATR42/72) and so has Adria. What is JAT's domestic network like? Do they fly to other places in Serbia too or just international?

Postitive Rate-Croatia Airlines does't operate the ATR-72 and the 737-200's are gone. Their fleet now is 3 A320-200's, 4 A319-100's and 3 ATR-42's.

My first flight "EVER" was back in 1987 on a JAT DC-10 from JFK-ZAG and then ZAG-ZAD on a DC-9. I am gonna miss these planes including the 727, good luck to JAT and hope to see them get new widebodies in the near future.

Bye bye to a big guy. Here in ZAG, in 80's, JAT's DC10's were the only "big" aircrafts, coming from JFK, ORD, YYZ...
In 1987, I had a summer job on the airport, and I was cleaning them after this long flights. I can't miss something I haven't seen for 13 years now, but I will for sure remember them.

Is it possible to fly Zagreb-Belgrade at the moment? Does either JAT or Croatia Airlines fly this route or has it disappeared since the war? Yeah i saw Croatia Airlines fleet when i was in Zagreb in 1999. Their entire fleet was lined up on the apron- still had the 737-200 back then. Zagreb airport was quite impressive actually and seemed very modern. I even got to see an Aeroflot TU154 close up. Cool stuff.

The older fleet consists of the following:
1 DC-10
9 DC-9-32
8 B-727-200

Out of these aircraft, 3 DC-9s are on lease to a Nigerian carrier. The remaining aircraft are either in the process of being sold, put to lease abroad, or retired altogether. Regardless of the status, they will no longer serve on JAT flights. Many of the aircraft mentioned above were already grounded in front of the main hangar at BEG for a while now.

The newer fleet consists of the following:
10 B-737-300
1 B-737-400
3 ATR-72-200

Within the next few months, JAT will incorporate at least one more Boeing 737-400 into the fleet. The airline intends on operating 18 aircraft this coming summer, so in addition to the 737-400, JAT will include at least three more 737s of undetermined series.

The predominant reason why the airline didn't get any new planes sooner extends to the economic turmoil caused by UN and EU sanctions imposed through the 1990s against Yugoslavia, while Slovenia and Croatia were exempt such effects. Overall its a great testament for JAT to have survived the effects of the gulf war and then ten years of sanctions.

JATs domestic network is small yet operated at good frequency. Both JAT and Montenegro Airlines fly regular flights between Belgrade, Podgorica, and Tivat. Aviogenex usually arranges charter flights on these routes during the summer. Currently the domestic flights are dominated by the DC-9, ATR-72 and B-737.

Meanwhile Nis Airport will once again be reopened for regular domestic and international traffic this summer, after its runway and terminal building were severely damaged from NATO aggression nearly four years ago. There is indication that Serbia will open two more airports that up to now have only been used for military purposes - Sombor (northern Serbia), and Uzice (southwestern Serbia). JAT is still waiting for approval from the UN administration in Kosovo, to resume flights to Pristina.

I think that the round-the-world flight was only meant as a promotional tour back then. However regular flights were thereafter established to most of the destinations visited during the tour.

I remember the FA from ATA L1011, back in 1995. We were both standing on the front door of the aircraft, watching the busses with pax comming from the terminal.
She smiled and said: "You got a very nice cargo building here in Zagreb... I would really like to see your passenger terminal once...".

CroFlight the airport has changed since 1995. When i was there in 1999 it wasn't too bad except it didn't have any aerobridges which doesn't bother me that much anyway i prefer to board an aircraft walking out to the tarmac myself dunno why its just more exciting. I think the airport has since been renovated even more, plans were on the drawing board when i was there.

Positive rate: I really like to hear that somebody actually likes the airport. It's not that bad, anyway... Just for your information, I am an ex-security manager of the same airport, spent 2/3 of my life there, and still, because of my new job, visiting it at least 3 times a week...

The drawings you saw (new east terminal) is still just a drawing, with uncertain future. The traffic is too small for any new buildings.

But, with this new announcements, who knows... maybe...
