I'm watching the simpsons right now, and it just featured Eastern Airlines. Marge and Lisa were in an Eastern Airlines Roller Coaster, going through Eastern Airlines World. Is this an older episode, or did Matt Groening decide to put Eastern Airlines in this episode?

This is a new episode. The reason for featuring Eastern is to show how out of date some of the Epcot rides are.

IIRC, Delta used to sponsor a ride in Disney World's Tomorrow Land. I don't think the ride still exists.

This sounds freaky but the Delta ride is my only memory of Epcot from the last time I was there in 1993...those aviation related memories stick out like crazy...

Does anyone remember the Eastern ride at Disney? My poor parents had to endure hundreds of rides on it when I was a kid. Had a nice L1011 model at the end too.

I remember the Eastern Airlines ride in Tomorrow Land I think. I think it did however later become Delta.

Eastern Airlines when I was at Disney in 86 was Disney Worlds official airline. But when I returned in 1990, Delta was.

Matt Groening seems to have a thing for airplanes, they're all usually pretty detailed and are used much more often than in most shows. Think he might?

N766UA, I remember him mentioning something about the use of airplanes in his cartoons. It was about a year ago.

I don't remember anything about Eastern or Delta when I was there, but then that was 10 years ago. One thing I do remember is that all that "future" stuff have there was so dated, even back then. It was so cheesy. Is it still like that? I guess it is being that the Simpsons was making fun of it.

BTW, what was the ride that involved the airlines about?

I only like the Test Track and World Showcase parts of Epcot, myself. The rest sucks. That said, Epcot is my favorite  Big grin.

First off, let me just say....that..was...AAAWWESOME!!!  Big grin

Ok, now for the serious answer.

Eastern Air Lines was once the "Offical Airline of Walt Disney World," and opened a theme ride in Tomorrowland called, "If You Had Wings." It opened shortly after Disney World opened in the 70s, and well...it was pretty weak.

But, EA had a really cool L-1011 model (later a five foot long B-757) in the exit lobby outside the ride. If memory serves, they even operated a City Ticket Office out of the Magic Kingdom for a short while.

When EA went into Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, they opted out of the Disney marketing deal, since it was an expense they simply could not afford.

Delta Air Lines became the "Official Airline" for the Magic Kingdom, and opened a ride in the old Tomorrowland space EA had vacated. It was called "Dreamflight"...and well, it was even weaker.  Insane

Last I'd heard, DL had dismantled Dreamflight entirely.

Very funn episode, though living in Florida and visting Epcot often, I do not think the park is at all outdated. However, I loved the satire.

The Eastern Airlines/Delta ride at Disney World was in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom. It closed in 1998, replaced by a Toy Story ride. I loved that ride! I do not know what it was called when EAL was the sponser, but Delta called it Dreamflight. Delta dropped sponsership in 1996 or so, but the ride continued as Take Flight!. During the ride, you would enter into a mock Boeing jet and get into a two passenger buggy (the buggies are still used on the Toy Story ride) for a trip into the history of aviation. From my memory, there was an animated scene showcasing aviation during the early 1900s, a ride through a 1930s airplane cabin, a room that surrounds you all around with an IMAX projection screen and features airplanes, accurate miniature models of Tokyo and Paris that you would fly be, and giant story books that open up with pop-up scenes of New York City, London, etc. with Delta planes in the background. Then you would exit down a one mile long path (not literally) with posters plastered all over the world adveritsing Delta's destinations. It was a great ride.

I loved the Eastern ride at Walt Disney World........"If You Had Wings." I also liked the haunted house, but I digress. I remember flying Eastern to Orlando in 1980 and the Disney characters were at the gate in Atlanta before we boarded. I cannot remember if they flew with us to Orlando, but when we arrived at the gate in MCO, they were waiting for us there too. That brings back fond memories. Now I have that song in my mind that played over and over as you went through the ride. And then at the end of the ride I think they gave you wings.

I thought I faintly remember animated EA L1011s throughout the ride too, but again this was 16 years ago so I just faintly remember something like that.

Yes on that trip I flew Eastern from DTW-ATL-MCO and back the first three planes were 727s on that trip and the last plane a DC-9

The show just ended out here in California. Gotta love the Simpsons! Epcot IS very lame and out of date, and the Simpsons give it a good roast. I love it...Lisa says "ooohhh...the future dome! It's what people in the 60s thought life would be like in 1987!"

The Eastern Airlines ride was hilarious with the Eastern Robots herding people around. I'll take one of those Eastern AirCars, please.

Actually, does anyone remember what was just about the only cool part about the ride itself? The IMAX-like projection from a helmet-mounted camera on a downhill ski run! That was awesome for back then.

Groening vs Delta:

"That took too long! How come we had to transfer in Atlanta twice?" (from Homer vs. NY)
(I know, that´s about the bus, but combined with the Futurama episode about the lost city of Atlanta ["The Deep South"], we know that Groening and DL have an, uh, special relationship - maybe they lost his bags once?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy )

I also loved "If You Had Wings," and I can still hum the song all the way through. There used to be a website where you could listen to it. If I can find it, I'll post the link.
