Why And When Did Delta Stop ATL-HAM Service?

Hello guys,

maybe some of you can help me out with some informations.

I really want to know why and when Delta Airlines stopped its nonstop service from Atlanta to Hamburg. I flew this route once in 1992, but as a looked up this route two years ago, it was gone?

I know that Delta is flying Atlanta-Stuttgart at the moment, but why they don't serve Hamburg anymore???

If you also know the aircraft types that were used for the ATL-HAM route -> that would be perfect  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think it was only A310 and Boeing 767???

I think they stopped flying during 1998/99 or so. I remember that one of their 763's had a front gear failure during taxying at HAM shortly before the route was withdrawn. There even was a picture of this incident in the former "Luftfahrt" magazine.

I can only speculate about the reasons - one of them might be that it was more efficient to use the new codesharing-deal with AF, which preceeded the formation of "Skyteam" in about 1998, and channel the traffic via CDG.

High loads in Y but very low loads in C and F as far as I understand, thus a high load factor but a low yield.

If my memory serves me, it was a bit earlier, in 1994.
They promised to resume service "at a later stage" but
DL never came back again.

Additionaly a 767-300 was involved in a ground accident in Sep 1993 while lining up rwy 33 causing the right undercarriage to collapse through the wing.
They got not the best image at EDDH from then...

I'm really hoping that Delta Airlines will come back to HAM. Maybe HAM could be served by United Airlines for the Star Alliance Network?

What do you think? Has HAM any chance to get a US nonstop flight by an us carrier or even Lufthansa? The A330 could do this service...
