Hi,

Came across a clip of an C-5B taking off. As the aircraft took off, there was some stuff that came off the left wing. Is that condensation from the wing or something else?? I don't think its condensation.

At 0:38 ?

I'm wondering if it's a light shining onto the fuselage - it does look as if it follows the curvature a bit. That said, I'm not sure why a light would be pointed there in broad daylight.

Looks like a reflection off a mirror. The sun seems to be over head, so what ever is reflecting might be near the runway.

It's no reflection because it's also visible in the air behind the plane. (0:39)

Looks like a bit of condensation created ice to me. It appears to dissipate most of its mass right as it appears with just a tiny part left as it gets to the aft end of the fuselage.

Looks like ice blowing off the leading edge and over the wing as the airflow picked up under the wing. You can see it break up and dissipate as soon as it gets away from the plane.

I should note, although that jet is marked in Stewart colors still, it belongs and operated by the 167th AW out of Martinsburg (Stewart no longer operates C-5s).

Can't be ice unless it came out of the cockpit. The flowers tells me it's late spring or early summer.
The sun is over head, so it's not early morning cold/condensation.

My next guess is some gear oil burning up as some actuator is activated or some high pressure bleed system is venting. The plane have just rotated. Is there anything near the wing root that would have been activated?

That's what it looks like to me. Multiple reflections from a parking lot maybe.

At first I thought so. But others convinced me to look again.

It looks like there as a puff of smoke, then it trailed then dissipated or broke up.

The other thought was a white bird hit the leading edge and exploded with feathers dispersing. But I couldn't see any birds prior to the event.

There's a clue at 31 seconds, a strong reflection from the sun off the cockpit window. I reckon its a reflection from another windscreen, watch the way it follows the contours of the plane even underneath the tail ramp

But you can see some of the white puff at the end not on the airframe.

bt, i've watched it loads now and to be honest can't see anything resembling a puff after the 'reflection' runs off the tail. There seems to be a second 'reflection' with the same pattern just on the tail ramp after the first one runs off but right now my brain won't let me see it as anything else  .

I checked out the video again at home on my screen and its definitely a reflection sunlight.

Agreed, it's some kind of reflection. The flash only appears on the fuselage and doesn't trail at all behind the aircraft....

Viewing on small screens it has the strong appearance of something falling off the aircraft. But on a full screen or big screen, it becomes obvious that it is a reflection.

Good catch.

May have been condensation moisture trapped in the lower skin well behind the aft spar. Depending on the fuel load the not all the moisture drains out of the weep holes in the lower wing panels till the aircraft gets under way and gets sucked out. Upon rotation the airflow drawers this moisture out past the flap leading edge. It makes sense if this were a turn around flight or it rained during an overnight stay. That is what I see from the video. I've seen this on take off especially in Fokker 100's from the spoiler well above the wing. Acceleration and pitch angle move the moisture aft into the slipstream and appears as a vortex or spray stream...g

At 39 seconds or there about, you can see the "anomaly" trailing off the rear cargo door and there is a patch on one of the right MLG tire. I wouldn't think the tires will be that reflective. Then a split second after that, you can see a light white streak just below the right MLG. That too may be a refraction off the lens, but it would be too much of a coincident. You may have to be quick with the pause button to see it.

You have my vote for now.

Looks like reflections of the runway markings and lights. Looking at videos of other C-5s and 747s among others, one can see this. Especially those with bare metal bellies.
