Just wondering....
If we were to get a retired military plane out of the boneyard for a display, museum ect... how much are we talking? I'm sure bigger is more, but just ball park figures, and just cost to get it out of the yard. I understand the extra cost to ship it off ect...

Aircraft that USAF donated for display remain the property of USAF. So assuming that you could get one donated preparation & transportation etc would be the primary expenses.

Well, we are in the process of getting an F-4C Phantom right now. We paid $4500 for the aircraft itself and will be paying between $2000-$5000 to transport it from Dayton, Ohio to Pittsburgh, PA.

Three years ago this august, we got an F-15A from Atlanta and that was $5000 for the aircraft and close to $10,000 IIRC for the trucking.

We were originally going to get a A-6 Intruder before we found out about the F-4 and that was in the range of $3500-$5000 for the aircraft. However, Intruders are almost impossible to be transported over road without destroying the aircraft as the center wing section is one piece and is too wide for the roads. The plane was still in flyable condition too.

So your looking at about $2000-$6000 to get an older US fighter jet. Are F-15A and F-4C are owned by the USAF still, technically speaking, but we have the rights to the aircraft for an indefinite time.

Very interesting flightsimer. Which museum is it that you work for? Love to see these planes going on display instead of rotting away.

We have the only flying C-123K provider left in the US if not the world. We also operate a Grumman Mohawk and Piper L-21B supercub. Currently we have a T-28B, T-34B, a 1946 Funk Bros Model B and a Fairchild F24-C8C in restoration to flight condition.

We have done work on lots of aircraft that are no longer ours or we're never our's to begin with including:

B-17G, Nine-0-Nine, Collings Foundation, complete restoration after it crashed at our airport
P-47D, Hairless Joe, complete restoration
P-51D, partial restoration
A-20H, under restoration prior to aircraft going to Geneseo NY
TB-25N, Hoosier Honey, now known as Tondelayo, Collings Foundation, did some work on it.
B-25, National Naval Aviation Museum, converted aircraft to PBJ-1 Standard; trucked and reassembled aircraft at NNAM.
Plus much more...

The Valiant Air Command (VAC) has a C-123 at the Titusville airport (TIX) that I go to their airshow every year. It is supposedly gonna be put back to airworthy status but I haven't seen much progress in all the years its been presented there. Kudos to you guys for getting one up and going!

Paul Pefley has a few Mohawks flying out of Lantanas airport down near WPB, FL and I used to get a chance to crawl around them taking pictures but a lot of that has changed over the years. There is one on the airshow circuit down here but I'm not sure if its one of his or not, or yours for that matter. In any case I'm glad to see the odd bird flying.

That is a special B-17 to me. Every single winter Nine O Nine and its sisters from Collings a B-24 and B-25 are down here just miles from my house at New Smyrnas airport (EVB) as American Aero Services does their annual maintance.

Nice - being close to the Cavanaugh at ADS - I've seen their Mohawk fly several times.

I believe you are referring to the Air America Foundation's C-123K, which is a sister ship of our C-123K as they both were stationed in Pittsburgh and i believe are only 10 #'s off of one another (ours is 664, theirs 674). It has not flown in many, many years. They are trying to restore it to flight however. There is also Ponderous Polly in North(South?) Carolina. Ponderous Polly and our C-123K were both from the same owner, Dave Tallichet from Chino California, though I don't know for sure if his estate still owns Polly. Polly had been flying up till about 1-2 years ago but was having Engine issues which grounded her. I believe she is in a near airworthy state though and hopefully will be flying again. All three of our organizations are helping each other out in some ways for each's aircraft.

We have been flying our C-123K on the airshow circuit for nearly 20 years now. We First arrived at the plane in early April 1994 at the Davis-Monthan Bone yard and had it back at Beaver County by May 14th, 1994. So he has been flying for quite some time now and we have been extremely lucky with how well of a bird she has been; maintenance wise. We have only done one engine change on her (by choice) and have only replaced two jugs in all the years. Knock on Wood...

As for Mohawks, there are about 5-10 flying around the country on the airshow circuits still. We used to have 2 OV-1D's ourselves but sold one to a Florida group in the mid 2000's due to not have enough pilots for both planes. We operate # 947 but previously had #946 as well.
