I saw one of these birds at Lindbergh Field in San Diego this morning on my way out of town...anyone know why it would be there? Thanks in advance!

These were also, at one time, frequent visitors to ELP-it was ferrying Luftwaffe personnel to and from Fort Bliss, Texas for air defense artillery training. I'm sure the reason for it's visit at SAN is probably similarly military related.

It always suprised me that they would land at ELP rather than BIF (2 nautical miles north...) I guess they liked having the nice jetway at the Civil field  Smile

Might the presence of cargo-unloading equipment have played a rôle here ?

BIF regularly unloads charter 747's (Pax models), C-141's and C-5's for troop movements, so I don't know that that is the answer.

Would the availability of service equipment / maint parts / personnel for the plane make a difference of the airport selected. ELP could have these but BIF does not. The 747's could be often enough at BIF that the ground crews / mechanics are available for them there.

It came in Monday morning. I was working at gate 7 and we all stopped to watch it taxi by. It was still there Tuesday.

Entirely possible. ELP sees a daily A300/A310 from Fedex and DHL (nee Airborne Express). The Luftwaffe A310 was always docked at the "spare" gate in the B concourse-I think it was gate B8? This gate is one of five in a circular gate area at the end of B concourse. My parents always told me that this gate area was built by CO, as El Paso was the city that they were founded in (as Varney Airlines). Before WN, I remember flying CO nonstop from ELP (with my parents) direct to SAT and DAL .

We had one come into NPA right after Hurricane Katrina hit bringing supplies from Germany. It was a very impressive site, as it was only a few days after the hurricane and German goods were already flowing into the damage area to help out.

Perhaps it's supporting German Naval Assets visiting San Diego, German Submarines training with the US Navy?

Oops...I forgot to even mention what I thought they were there for.  Big grin

Yeah, they're probably there for either support of a training exercise or conducting an exercise of their own. We have an extensive network of German sailors and soldiers being trained here in the states, so it isn't surprising to see this coming over.
