Large High-wing 4 Engined Jet Over MKE?

Around 5:30pm central time, as I was taking a walk in my hometown of Milwaukee, WI, I saw a large contrail approaching from the northeast. At first I expected to see a 747, however, as the aircraft drew closer its contrail dissipated and it appeared to have descended as well as slowed. Upon closer inspection it appeared to be a high-wing 4 engined jet with a T-tail. It didn't fit the profile of a C-17, so my best guess is that it was a C-5. However, I have seen an Algerian Air Force IL-76 in MKE before, so I wonder if perhaps we had a visitor from another country?

Does anyone have any info on a large military transport coming into either MKE or MSN (or maybe ORD, though it seemed too low and headed in the wrong direction for ORD to be likely) ?

Maybe an AN-124? USAF have been contracting some operators for heavy lifts to the current war theaters.
Just a thought!

Probably not, the AN-124 doesn't have a t-tail.

What did the plane sound like? The C-17 sounds much different than the C-5 or IL-76

My bad, didn't read the post carefully enough!  Smile

Well, a combination of its altitude and the ambient noise of the city traffic prevented me from hearing it very well. It certainly wasn't loud, but at the same time, it was clearly descending, so I'm guessing it was going into either MKE or MSN. From what I _was_ able to hear, it seemed to be making a humming turbine sound. As I said, though, it didn't appear to have winglets like the C-17, and it didn't appear to have the "chubby" appearance of the C017.
