Bob Baranaskas of Warbirds Over Long Island was killed on Sunday afternoon when his P-40 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Smith Point County Park on Long Island. Bob was preparing for the upcoming air show season. His son Chris, who flies a P-51 in airshows along with his father, was on the beach acting as a safety observer at the time of the crash.

I was stunned when I heard the news about about Bob. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Bob and Chris over the past few years. They were frequent performers at the Jones Beach Air Show, and made appearances at many events at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport. Bob was always a gentleman, a true professional. My thoughts and prayers are with his family tonight.

He was 61 and sounds like he was practicing aerobatics. ...Maybe he became disabled by a medical problem whilst pulling G's.
