AgustaWestland Boeing Build Italian CH-47Fs

It seems AgustaWestland and Boeing have sign the contract to build 16 ICH-47F for the Italian Air Force. AgustaWestland is the primary contractor and Boeing is the sub-contractor.

In Boeing's press release, they state they are building the frames in PA. Why not just build complete aircraft (to Italian specs) in the US and ship them to Italy? Wouldn't that be more cost effective, especially in these economic times?

I'm not in the Aviation Industry but am a helicopter lover and very curious.

Any idea What Agusta's part is? The article doesn't mention such negligable items as engines and rotors. It's kinda hard to see calling Boeing the sub contractor.

The 47 and the C-130 have to be the greatest workhorses the military's ever had.

Oh yeah....And that (I'm not a 707 damnit!!) tanker.

Including for export, not just for the Italian Army.

Probably just a way to help Boeing get some business. If they went to Italy and said "We get all of the profit/business" they probably would have said know. But it you go into the meeting and say "We will let you be the prime and help you economy, you get the helicopter, and we get a bit of money for us too."

This is the argument about spreading all kinds of work around the world. You give business to various countries and they will give you some business back.

Offsets are a fact of life in the defense business and oftentimes that's the only way to close a deal.

Correct, Elicotteri Meridionali (an Agusta Company at that time) built near 40 CH-47 for the Italian Army and near 100 for other customers.

I'm just wondering why this time the airframes will be produced in US and then deliver to Italy for the final assembly: labour keeping measure for the US factory? Production line capabilities in Italy focused on other products such as the best sellers NH-90, AW-139, etc?

777, I think you are right, Agusta are a different company for a very different industry.
Back when the CH-47C's were built in Italy, Agusta had a much smaller portfolio of choppers designed by them.
Most of their work, (like Westland in the UK), was from license building US types.

It probably is not economically sound for Agusta to fully build a further batch of newer model Chinooks, also this time I doubt they would be allowed to carry on beyond re-equipping the Italian forces, to export new 'Agusta-Chinooks'.
(But they might make some good money in upgrading other forces CH-47's, is this deal a route to that?)

Could do KC-135, although Westland in the UK have done previous ones, while not built in the UK, Westland did provide some components for the RAF fleet.
Since an out of service date of around 2040 for RAF Chinooks has been indicated, it might well be the case for very major rebuilds that Agusta do them.
