I have these old soviet epaulets that I got from a relative of mine in russia about 8 years ago. Lately a friend of mine told me it would be a shitty idea to sew them into this new jacket I bought, but instead find somebody who knows whats so special about them (because apparently, they're special). So what can you tell me about what these and the insignia/ranking/history/etc.?

Well the rank is a Lt. Colonel (if they were small stars it would be a Lt.), with airforce or navy aviator device. I am not sure what the green color and blue strips signify.

On second thought I might have it. Those boards could be KGB State Security. http://www.uniforminsignia.net/?opti...signiasearch&Itemid=53&result=1921

Yeap, it is a KGB LtCol. flyer (pilot or navigator), I would not wear them in public.

Air Force lieutenant (Lt Col would have three stars). Not KGB.

A Lt would have two small stars, Lt. Col has two large stars (like the photo above). A full colonel would have three large stars.

Indeed. I stand corrected.

Still not KGB, though.

Looking here

http://www.tridentmilitary.com/SovietInsignia.htm

the colors are blue stripes and green for service jacket, grey for parade overcoat and gold for parade uniform.
