What Will Happen With This France AF DC 8?

Just came across this picture:

and was wondering if this aircraft will be scrapped or restored and put on display ?


It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

That DC-8 was the only DC-8-55 in the world equipped with CFM-56 engines and an APU. It use to be the French Air Force excutive transport. It has been replaced by two French Air Force A-340-300s. It looks like she is going to be scrapped with useable, or sellable parts being removed first.

To make my self clearer, this aircraft is standing in Le Bourget - a closed airport - which is also used as a museum.
In this museum you find an AF 707, 747, Concorde and other historic aircraft. Hence my question will the aircraft be put on display there.

Besides, are you in the right forum ? This is an airliner enthusiast forum and given that there are many classical aircraft preserved in museums I consider this a legitimate question !

I believe the Dc 8 are only troop carriers and no executive transport aircraft.
The two A340-200 -former AUA- aircraft are also only troop carriers for executive transport the French Air Force uses A319ACJ and acquired an used A330-200.

When I was stationed at Pease AFB, NH, French President François Mitterrand flew in this DC-8-55 to PSM (1989) when he visited with then POTUS Bush (41) at the Bush compound in Kennebunkport, ME.

All I know is this DC-8 was used at least once as a VIP transport. President Bush had his VC-137C at PSM, also. The French DC-8 was parked with our KC-135s and the VC-137 was put inti the big hanger (which was where Bush stored his boat).

I suspect the airplane was so equipped that a VIP interior layout could be installed in a short time if needed. Same could probably be said of a number of cargo plane types in use around the world.

Okay, if this was indeed used as the French AF 1 it is one more reason to preserve it

I remember seeing this DC-8 at at LAX a few times, I thought it was a DC-8-72.

L'ARMEE DE L'AIR had three DC-8-62CF's that were modified to DC-8-72CF's in the early eighties. These were MSN/Line# 46013/427, 46043/443 and 46130/542. I've searched for this illusive DC-8-55 with CFM56's but cannot find a thing. Do you happen to have a MSN/Line# for that Jet?

It looks as if this aircraft (on of several Armee de l'Air Series 50s) has been sitting idle at least since 2005. The 2009 photo shows her faded and much worse for the wear, not to mention with engines and other parts missing. I sincerely hope she will be restored, but this would require a tremendous amount of work. With money, anything is possible, but there is certainly a shortage of that these days.... Still, let's keep hoping for a miracle.

As for the CFM-56 engines, I believe these were re-fitted only on the Supers; otherwise, we would have seen them rather than the usual Pratts in the 2005 photo.

Beautiful aircraft! I had a personal tour of the back area that it is in on 3/21/08 and it was not there then. I do not think it will be scrapped as that is the Musee Le Espace Restoration facility so I believe there are plans to preserve it, along with the AF 707 that has been there since 1978. They told me all of the above.

No 50-series DC-8s were converted to CFM56 engines. The only French Air Force DC-8s that underwent that modification were their 3 ex-Finnair DC-8-62CFs. They were among the very few (total 7) DC-8-62s converted to -72s with CFM56s. The rest of the 110 DC-8s converted to CFM56s were all -61s and -63s.
