Today as I was driving down the LIE, I noticed something somewhat unusual around here, the site of a C-17 on final approach to runway 24, then about five minutes later he seemed to be circling around the field. Does anyone know why a C-17 would be in this area today?

Might be a McGuire AFB based C-17 looking for someplace quiet to do some touch and go's.

That was my guess when I saw it. I have seen other military planes do touch and goes at Islip in the past. Most recently I seen a C-130 doing touch and goes a few weeks ago. It was probably from the 106th Rescue Wing.

There are several airports in the northeast that risk losing federal funds due to reduced commercial operations. Pease in Portsmouth, NH has even gone so far as to waive fees and fueling charges for troop charters that would normally land up in Bangor. These are World DC-10s and MD-11s, and OAI DC-10s most often, but also North American 757s and 767s.

Anyway, Pease needs to hit certain operating metrics to ensure that it gets federal stimulus funds and this is a way to boost cycles and enplanements. Ironic that Pease has a whole bunch of KC-135Rs of its own as part of the NHAG, which could be hitting the cycles for the airport. Problem is, they aren't lugging 300 passengers like those World MD-11s are!

I was thinking that any airport needing touch & goes should contact places like McGuire and say, 'Come here with your C-17s!'

Do offers like that go out to bases like McGuire et al?
