Just wanted to make an update on my country - Portugal - and the latest news I have about that. Let's talk about that:

Replacement of the EC635 - Until now not any further news, Westland Lynx could be one of the contenders but we have US manufacturers like Bell and Sikorsky.

Army Transport Helicopter - It's already going on the purchase of 10 NH-90 for the Portuguese Army. Portugal is now a full NATO member in this program and the conclusion of this program will end by 2010.

Air Force SAR Helicopter - It as been already confirmed the purchase of 12 EH101 Merlin. 4 of them will be exclusif for SAR missions, 6 will have a dual mission SAR/Combat and finnally 2 will be used in fishing fiscalization and their purchase is supported by EU.

C-212 Aviocar replacement - Portugal was the first foreign air force to order this truly great "workhorse". Portuguese Air Force have 22 of them flying with great safety results for about 25 years, now it's time to replace them, contenders will be CASA ( again of course.... ) and Alenia. Personal feeling is that the Portugal will keep working with CASA, the C-212 was a truly winner in Portugal Air Force hands, and of course we have a very good and close relation with Spain and their aviation!

A400M for Portugal - Things seems to get clear now, the C-130J Super Hercules is cheapper and with a better delivery schedule than the A400M, Portugal will need to wait at leat 6 more years until we see any of those flying..... and the C-130H's are getting quite old, already 25 years old, except a latter order that is already 10 years old!

That's all about tiny little Portugal but with a lot of potencial present!

It is too bad, Portugal never considered buying An-70s which are more capable and cheaper. To my knowledge DaimlerChrysler is willing to cooperate with Berijev in regards to bring the new BE 200 to western markets and I think it is likely that a western company is willing to cooperate with Antonov as soon as there is a major client. Nothing against the C-230J but the fuselage is comparatively narrow.
Another question: As Portugal goes for the C-130J - will they purchase some C-27J aircraft as well? Those new Spartans feature the same avionics and propulsion systems as the new Hercules. This may result in lower acquisition costs and comparatively low costs for maintenance.

That's a very good point what you're saying, I'm not sure about any decision yet, what I feel is that the CASA 235 will be better positioned to win, this because Portugal is already using the C212B and C212-300 and you know the close relation Portugal have with Spain, but in the other way I agree that with the combination C-130J/C-27J Portugal could have better economic results. We need to wait and see, what I can tell you is that a budget is already reserved for that order. What do you think about Portugal helicopter options, I think the EH101 is an excelent choise to replace the Puma, we got our first Puma's in 1969!!!!

well, as for the EH-101: The Merlin is the navalized, still military version, so I guess you meant the Cormorant which seems to be a (if not the) top notch SAR-helicopter?
It's interesting to see Portugal choosed the NH 90 for the Army and not the original version of the EH-101, which, on the other hand, is quite expensive and probably not affordable.
Does Portugal still have Ch-56s for heavy lift? If so, going for the lighter NH 90 makes even more sense.

BTW: I guess you and the others here on the forum noticed that the production lines for CH-53 are down without any successor in sight? Not in Europe - nor in the U.S. German Bundeswehr already announced the're in a need for a hig-speed-longrange-helicopter, capable to transport at least 10t as a replacement for their old-fashined CH-53s. Duh ... I think, this time American and European companies should work closely together in order to avoid exorbitant development/acquisition costs.

Regards and a nice weekend,
