It sounds like other aircraft were hit too, but eighteen Mitsubishi FSX fighters (license-built F-16s) at a price tag of US$2.3bil were written off when Matsushima Air Base was leveled, taking 21st Squadron with it. The flight crew appears to have been taking R&R that day, which is why none were flown out after the quake itself hit.
