While reading a recent forum, I ran across something that caused me to look for a copy of a particular book on military aviation accidents. As I usually do, the first place I looked was on Amazon; there are a number of reasons I buy many books on Amazon. The first is, I read a lot of books, so if I had to buy them all new, I'd go broke ! The second reason is, even though there are a few more good places to buy great used books, Amazon is the only place I know of where you can buy them without paying shipping & handling, ( which saves one $ 3.99 per book, right off the bat ! )
Anyway, while I was looking for this book I was interested in, I found another book that I ended up buying; anyone who is interested in military aviation will love this book ! It's "title" is......"The Wrong Stuff", and the author is Cdr. John Moore, USN Ret. Cdr. Moore has the "dubious distinction" of having made more "wheels-up" landings than any other military pilot of any branch, mainly due to his being selected as "Chief Test Pilot" of what probably was the single most "bizarre" test "project" in Naval history, "The Naval Flex-deck Project"; the reason behind this, was to "explore" the "possibility / suitability" of landing jet fighter aircraft with NO landing gear. The whole scheme was dreamed up by some "dweeb" engineering types in the DOD; surprisingly enough, some otherwise perfectly sane people became interested in the idea, and decided to "give it a go"..........The Royal Air Force, the U.S. Air Force, as well as the U.S. Navy. After four combat tours flying off of carriers off the coast of North Korea, Cdr. Moore became a Naval Test Pilot, and after "surviving" some number of years of that, retired, and became a civilian test pilot with North American / Rockwell, then spent the remainder of his career in the "Apolo Program" at Cape Kennedy / Canaveral.
All things considered, this is quite possibly the wildest, the "hairiest", the most interesting, and in many places, the saddest book I have ever read. I highly recommend "The Wrong Stuff" to anyone who is interested in aviation, the military, or anyone who just wants an "inside look" at why so many government "projects" ended up putting so many brave men into Arlington National Cemetery, with no gain what-so-ever.
