My daughter, who works as an F/A-18 mechanic (AD1) assigned to VFA-122 was at work at the time of the crash. She said she didn't witness the crash, but she could see the burning wreckage from her hangar. She was put on standby as part of the Emergency Recovery Team, but they didn't need her. She doesn't know who the crew members were (not released yet), but was understandably upset nonetheless, as she knows many of the squadron's aircrew.
According to the slightly longer CNN report that she sent me, an active-duty mechanic not authorized to speak on behalf of the Navy told CNN he witnessed the incident. He heard the jet flying and suddenly "it got really quiet," he said. The F/A-18F pilot apparently tried to bank left and pull up when the plane crashed into a field, he said. "We didn't see any seats punch out."
My condolences go out to the crew and their family.

Apparently the crashed jet was a F/A-18F, and not a F/A-18D.
