617 Sqn, probably the most famous RAF unit, has celebrated 60 years since being formed with Lancaster bombers, for a special mission, the famous attacks on the Ruhr dams with Barnes Wallis's 'bouncing bomb'.
The unit was made up of experienced crews from the UK and Commonwealth, later they attacked a German battleship in Norway.
Post war, they flew Lincolns, Valiants and Vulcans, before converting to Tornado GR.1s in 1982.
Now elements of 617 Sqn are on operations in the Gulf on Tornado GR.4s.

Despite operations, some crew posed for an anniversary picture, note the Storm Shadow, a new long-range, steathly cruise missile brought into service early, better seen in the lower picture, also note the nose art on the upper pic, in the last Gulf War in 1991, most UK aircraft had nose art, often characters from the adult comic 'Viz', some were not amused with drawings including the giant testicled 'Buster Gonad' or 'The Fat Slags', I did not expect to see nose art this time due to the more controversial nature of this war.

A great and historical squadron...

With all the arguments about the war, pro and con, the difficulties in justifying something so difficult and horrible as war and the dilema of fighting or allowing a mad man to remain in power you would think there would not be people who would bitch about NOSE ART. For Gawd's sake....

2912n, I think any objections were from some pilots who may not have been too happy with something like Viz's 'Johnny Fartpants' on their aircraft!
Here are some 1991 Gulf War RAF nose art, scroll down for the photos;

Okay, I guess having Fartpants on your plane could be a little irritating...
