Exactly what kind of load can the F-16 carry? My understanding is that it can carry two Mavericks, two AMRAAMS and two A-9s. Can it carry more than 2 Mavericks or 2 Harms at one time?

It can in theory carry 4 HARMs, but my understanding is that although that has been done in testing conditions this practice is not employed operationally (requires software modifications in the aircraft or something along those lines). It should be able to carry more than 2 AGM-65's, I've seen drawings of clusters of 3 Mavs on the middle wing hardpoints of F-16's (for a total of 6) with external fuel tanks on the points closest to the fuselage (perhaps without the fuel tanks 6 more missiles can be fitted?). 4 2000lb bombs under wings are possible, I assume a fifth one can be fitted instead of the centre external fuel tank (?).

Edit:

Basically, up to 8 AGM-65's can be carried.

LY744,

Is it me, or is that that pic from the good old weapons loading screen from Falcon 4.0?

I'm just very interested in the amount of armament that the F-16 can carry to the battlefield.

If one compares these two photos, then it looks like the F-16 carries a minimal punch to the battlefield when compared to the F-15E

In theory, you could carry 6 AGM-65 (Maverick), 2 AGM-88 (HARM), and 4 AIM-120s plus carry a droptank or an ALQ (ECM pod) on the centerline.

In practice this isn't done often because with such a load range is quite limited, a load of 4 AGMs and 2 AAMs being more practical (with either an ALQ or a droptank on the centerline).

Max loadout would be 12 Mk.82, 2 Mk.84, 4 AIM-120, and a droptank on the centerline (or 4 B-61 nukes, 4 AIM-120s and a droptank).

CX747, the F-15E is indeed a much bigger aircraft, with a greater "punch". It can carry up to ~23000lb in payload. The F-16 is realistically in the 15000lb neighborhood.

Sinlock, I was in a hurry and forgot to credit f-16.net, which is where the picture is from, where they got it from I don't know.  Smile

It should be noted that the F-16XL "Cranked Arrow" model with a complete delta wing was the competitor to the F-15E, and had the potential to carry substantially more armament and munitions...

How can I track down my F-16 I worked on in the Air Force and find out if it is still in service?

It was a block 35 F-16C model, Reg # 83-353 or maybe 81-353, Last station was Kunsan Korea, WolfPack , Yellow Squadron "Juvats".

Evidently, NASA still flies at least one of the F-16XLs. I think 2 were made, but I'm not totally sure.
