BAE Systems has announced the closure of it's Chadderton, Manchester factory after more than 70 years of aircraft manufacturing at the site. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-14062736

Originally owned by AVRO, the site has seen the likes of the Avro Manchester, Avro Lancaster, and the Bristol Blenheim being built.

It will be a sad day when the factory closes for the final time. Thanks for everything, Chadderton.

What a shame! I remember many moons ago being invited to take a few 'tests' their with a view to employment!
With the state of the armed forces, the country and the aviation industry this is more than sad news.

So what should they be doing? If there is no work why keep spending on a site that will loose them money?

Well that's the point: I suspect the reason why "there is no work" is probably because BAE system has not put the investment necessary to keep these sites competitive. BAE just don't show any interest in civil stuff, a very good example is what they did to what used to be their Airbus part (18%): almost no investments for decades, and eventually they got rid of it. I am quite happy Airbus UK is now EADS, and not BAE anymore...
