Listening to Kennedy Tower and heard Nighthawk 1 and "nighthawk flight of 3", what are these callsigns and does anyone know why they're at JFK?

Thanks a lot.

HMX-1 (Marine presidential helicopter flight) uses the callsign "Nighthawk".

It's quite interesting listening actually. Tower doesn't seem too keen to argue with them..

I'm guessing that because the helicopter is there, Air Force 1 isn't? If it is, it obviously wont have the air force 1 callsign.

Incidently, a "reach" aircraft (C17 I guess?) departed shortly after, not sure if that had anything to do with it?

The C-17 support aircraft usually fly in all the special limo's and secret service SUV's etc.

FYI reach call sign could be any a/c being used by AMC .Could be C17 or DAL 744 or any other civil charted a/c

Yeah, I knew it wasn't only a C-17, that was just my logical guess.

Chinooks? Since when does he fly in the CH-47? Marine One could be any chopper Obama is on, but they are typically the VH-3D Sea King or the VH-60N Whitehawk (which is the presidential version of the Blackhawk).

HMX-1 also flies the the CH-46 Sea Knight which is quite often mistaken for a Chinook.

There's no mistaking them if you seem them side by side though! But yes a lot of people do confuse them and even on the Military Channel on cable they will show a CH-46 when narrating about a CH-47... which is, on that channel, inexusable.
