I had a solo cross country today and one of my stops was TIX and I saw this plane and took a picture of it. I first thought it was a C-130 but after seeing the picture it looks like a C-130 with jet engines. I have never seen this kind of plane before and was wondering if anyone knew what it was.

It's a Fairchild C-123 provider. The propulsion has an interesting story, as it was originally designed as a glider and one prototype had no engines, one had piston engines, and a third had four jet engines. Most were built with piston engines and some variants added jet engines as well for additional power.
Why do Aerospace Engineering students have to turn things in on time?

You must have missed it in quite a few movies. Air America, XXX, A Man Apart, Conair, Airforce One, Outbreak, etc....

The plane is missing it's prop blades, which is why they look like jet engines...

It had a semi-starring role in Die Hard 2 with those jet engines. "How many grenades we got?!...USE EM"

In the right hand lower quadrant (alongside the margin) there seems to be a "fragment" of an image, of a nose section of a military aircraft???? That section looks like a photoshopped section, and I am not sure it fits there with the background of a hangar in the distance, but perhaps it was just a fuselage section of some kind?

It's not photoshopped, I don't understand why you would say that.

I see those planes just about every Saturday at TIX- Those are indeed a C-123 and a Caribou nose section. The C-123 belongs to the Air America Foundation- they're actively restoring it.

Well, it's not that everyday you see a front section of a plane, and the rest seems "missing". Also, in the background a grey rectangular structure is present that almost coincides with the abrupt end of the fuselage section, while in the far background, the hangar structure can be seen, with a different color spectrum ... well, the link from DanatFCM is self explanatory.

BOACVC10, I think what you see in the grey retangular structure behind the C-7 nose section is the sliding hanger door.

I too see that C-123 every year when I go to the TICO airshow.. which I just did again for the 26th time just a couple of weeks ago.
Quick question Dana, is that the C-123 that Harry Doan (of VAC) used to own? I kinda always assumed it was since most of his aircraft were based just up the road a bit in New Smyrna. Coincidentally and tragically Harry died at that very airshow back in the mid 90's.

I couldn't say for sure- I don't know that name or the full history of that C-123. I'll be at VAC on Saturday- maybe I'll ask around.

Actually, I don't think so- the database shows the above photo as 54-1603; the AAF website lists their aircraft as tail 54-674.

Please do, I'd be glad to know and have wondered for years (but never went over and asked lol). Harry Doan was a prominent Daytona Beach (where I live) business man, he owned the Main Street Peir, the space needle on the beach and a bunch of other businesses. He also had one of the most extensive collections of flying (as in actively flying) warbirds of any one person I knew of (as opposed to a VAC, CAF, ETC). I can't recall all the aircraft he had, but among them were B-25's, F-4G Corsair (the famous #57 of Reno fame), Venom, Panther, Cougar, A-1 Skyraiders, C-123 and maybe the C-119, T-28s etc.

Ah gotcha. I would like to know what happened to Harry's 123 then. I had my previous post open for some time, whilst trying to look up a list of what Harry had in his fleet.. but largely to no avail.
