The Other Sikorsky Blackhawk: The S-67

Mention Sikorsky Blackhawk and the UH-60/S-70 is the Sikorsky Black Hawk to everyone. However, there is actually an earlier machine; with the name as one word instead of two. I did a search and it dosen't seem to be mentioned in the forum or featured in the photos section. Why is there no knowledge or interest of this trailblazer in A.net?
As an adolescent back in the early seventies, when I was just beginning to have more than a passing interest in things aviation, one of the aircrafts I greatly admired then (and still do) was the S-67 Blackhawk - along with the SR-71 Blackbird and the XB-70 Valkyrie. (It seems 7 is the common denominator of my favourites but I digress.) I first read about it in either Air International or Newsweek or Time or Popular Mechanics or.....
In its time it was the fastest chopper and the most powerful helicopter gunship in the world. Swift, sleek and deadly. A beautiful machine with so much going for it; at least in the wide eyes of a young airplane enthusiast.
So sad that only one example was ever built and it crashed.
Do anyone here know of it? Care to share some details and pics? There's pretty little anything on it in the web and very limited info on Wiki.

Unfortunately, the S-67 was built really fast (nine months), so there wasn't a lot of internal documentation on it within Sikorsky. Additionally, its life was relatively short, so there aren't a lot of pictures of it. However, if you search around on the web, you will find pictures of it in the various configurations it flew in (tail rotor, fan-in-fin, armed, etc.). When I worked at Sikorsky, the mockup of the AH-3 follow-on was stored in the swamp behind the plant. Additionally, the fan-in-fin tail from the S-67 was stored out on the flight line. I just checked Google Earth and both appear to be gone.



The S-72 RSRA shares much of the same design. When Dan Golden was NASA administrator, he ordered them to be scrapped, but the folks at NASA Ames hid them instead in one of the old navy hangars at Moffett Field. I've tried to get in to see them (and the QSRA), but I couldn't get access.

There have been some great magazine articles over the years.

Crashed at Farnborough and both crew ended up with fatal injuries.

I wonder if the design of the "Black Hawk" became the inspiration for the various TV models of gunships, including Airwolf. The helicopter just looked futuristic at that time on TV.
