According to an article on LATimes.com,, the Space Shuttle Endeavor is scheduled to arrive at LAX on September 20, where it will be housed at the United Airlines hangar in preparation for its eventual move to the California Science Center.
Excerpt: Weather permitting, Endeavour will arrive at LAX Sept. 20, Rudolph said. There, a team of NASA engineers will lift the shuttle off the plane using cranes and a giant sling, and move it to a United Airlines hangar, where final preparations will be made for its ground transport. The big move will continue Oct. 12 when the shuttle — nestled on the back of computer-controlled modular transporters — will begin its crawl along a route that includes Manchester Avenue and Crenshaw and Martin Luther King Jr.boulevards.
What a sight that will certainly be, both at LAX and as the Shuttle snakes its way through greater Los Angeles.

I am very excited about this. I did not realize it was coming that early; thank you for sharing the link. It is great that it will spend time at LAX; what a sight that should be. It is great that California is getting one of the shuttles. It will be great to watch it crawl through downtown; that will be quite a journey. I am really looking forward to this. If anyone can get pics of the shuttle while on the ground at LAX, please post them.

I would love to go see it as well, but it does depend on the time. It will be great to see the bird and the shuttle land. It is too bad the observation deck is not open during the week.

I wonder how UA was chosen to hold the shuttle; did they have to put in a bid? It seems like that would be an honor; good for them. They have a nice, large facility (which I believe answers my question) at LAX, which will be good for the job. It would be great to see UA planes next to the shuttle. I wonder if they will put a restriction on whether planes can even be there with the shuttle and/or how close they can get to the shuttle. I guess if UA could not use their own facility for that long, it would be bad for them. (I think that answers my question, but I am not 100% sure.)
I may have to ask for some time off that day....Here's hoping they announce the arrival time and runway beforehand. Though if it's going to UA's hangar, I'd imagine it'll land on the south side.

Here is the scoop
Shuttle Endeavour's arrival will be on 25L, exact time is not certain yet as winds will dictate (cant be more than 10kt wind) Will roll out to the end and exit Taxiway-U. It will be parked at the UA hangar at C-17.
Phase two will be removing Endevour from the top of the 747 which will take about 2 days. The preparation for transport will take 7-10 days at the airport.
Departure from LAX will be the morning of October 12th as soon as sunrise as the North airfield will be closed for a few hours. It will be moved from the UA hangars up Taxiway-AA, left on E, right on BB crossing both runways, then around the north service road and onto public streets.
Once on city streets, the route is.... (over 2 day period)
NASA will begin staging equipment and materials at LAX late August.
There will also be several special events at LAX
•Space Shuttle Arrival – Welcoming Ceremony
•VIP/Customer reception
•Employee viewing event
•Public viewing along street route to California Science Center.

Target time is general "mid-day", but its all subject to change based on enroute and local weather.
I understand besides airport wind, any potential enroute rain could also delay the delivery flight from Florida.
Btw - NASA is billing this as "Mission 26"

The spinners were only for the rollover from OPF 2 to High Bay 4. They were removed within minutes of arrival in the High Bay 4. It was an inside joke for the staff.

Imperial Hill is the best off-airport spot for the south runways, yes. It will probably be packed, yes.

That's what I thought. I saw the pic of the Shuttle in front of the old CO hanger on our Employee's website. I said to myself, that sign is new. I don't believe CO had ever had their name and logo on their LAX hangars. I do remember they had the widebody hangar doors painted gold, red, and orange one time in the past.
