This will be the final time a space shuttle orbiter will be ferried. Cleared for public release:
OFFICIAL NOW:
In cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, the SCA is scheduled to conduct low-level flyovers at about 1,500 feet above locations along the planned flight path. The exact timing and path of the ferry flight will depend on weather conditions and operational constraints. Some planned flyovers or stopovers could be delayed or
cancelled. If the ferry flight must be postponed for any reason, an additional advisory will be issued.
At sunrise on Sept. 17, the SCA and Endeavour will depart Kennedy's Shuttle Landing Facility and perform a flyover of various areas of the Space Coast, including Kennedy, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Patrick Air Force Base.
The aircraft will fly west and conduct low flyovers of NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi and the agency's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. As it arrives over the Texas Gulf Coast area, the SCA will perform low flyovers above various areas of Houston, Clear Lake and Galveston before landing at Ellington Field near NASA's Johnson Space Center. Weather permitting, the SCA and Endeavour will stay at Ellington the remainder of Sept. 17 and all day Sept. 18.
At sunrise on Wednesday, Sept. 19, the aircraft will depart Houston, make a refueling stop at Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, Texas, and conduct low-level flyovers of White Sands Test Facility near Las Cruces, N.M., and NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California, before landing around midday at Dryden.
On the morning of Sept. 20, the SCA and Endeavour will take off from Dryden and perform a low-level flyover of northern California, passing near NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., and various landmarks in multiple cities, including San Francisco and Sacramento. The aircraft also will conduct a flyover of many Los Angeles sites before landing about 11 a.m. PDT at LAX

Does anyone know of the plane at Ellington? Is there any decent viewing area? Will they open to the public for this? With them being there for a whole day I would think they'd allow some sort of public viewing. I'm also wondering about watching the landing/takeoff there.
Or what about Dryden? Any chance of a public view of the landing there?

As it turns out I'm doing photos at Titusville HS (right across the river, literally) that morning but I'm going to try and finnangle my way out of whatever time slot its leaving to get across the river and grab my shots... so as soon as you know more details about the departure time from KSC let us know please, and thank you!

Current schedule is 0715H wheels up. Sunrise is 0709H. The SCA is cleared to go beginning 20 minutes before Sunrise (if i remember correctly).
She will be going to do the same tour as the last time and come back for one final pass (the last time i checked). It takes about 20 minutes so there should be good sun for the final pass. However, clouds in the east could interfere. The clouds did help me get this though so I cannot complain
Okay thank you. On the radio today they mentioned 7am during an advertisement for the event.. but I take it with a grain of salt. As the day gets closer if you can confirm the actual time (since I will have to modify my work schedule hopefully) please let us know.

What's the contingency plan if it can't leave KSC on time due to wx? Do they cut short the Houston stop to keep it on time or just slide the time back? I've noticed that most SCA/Orbiter flights leave at dawn - would they leave later in the day or put it off for Tuesday?

I would keep the window 0700H- 0800H open as off now. I see a wheels up time of 0730 as a target currently.

Weather at KSC, weather along the route and weather at EFD will be evaluated before launching. If any one of those three out of limits, she will sit on the ground.
Quoting Bruce (Reply 7): Do they cut short the Houston stop to keep it on time or just slide the time back?
Very low probability.

Weather in FL goes downhill in the afternoon usually. Sunrise departure is to take advantage of the calm weather. Again, she will go if the weather is clear at KTTS,along the route and EFD.
I post updates when i can, hopefully i can post from my phone on here when at KTTS. I have not tried it before.

There was talk about the ferry flight flying over MCO and Disney on its way out west. I can't see anything officially posted anywhere. The theme parks aren't really open that early, so Disney doesn't make sense unless it is just a photo op to get it with the Castle behind it or something.
Low flyovers are still planned along Cape Canaveral and at NASA facilities in Louisiana and Mississippi. A stop in Houston will be shortened to one day.
Endeavour is expected to arrive in Los Angeles on Thursday for its eventual installation at the California Science Center. Endeavour is the second of NASA's three retired shuttles to head to a museum. Discovery landed at the Smithsonian Institution's display hangar in Virginia last spring. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy.

Just a heads up for those of you who plan to take leave and travel.
Looking ahead (this is not official), the forecast has conditions for Tuesday and Wednesday, that makes me feel less than optimistic for the KSC departure. Thursday looks good currently.
The mission planners are cautious and will not succumb to schedule pressure hence will hold for the best weather for takeoff, along the route and at the destination.

I hope it waits until Friday now - thats my next day off and I am going out there for the Cocoa Beach Airshow practice. That would be an awesome addition to the airshow.

Quoting michiganatc (Reply 21): Friday arrival at LAX now, per NASA. Update at 11am ET Tuesday.
Luckily, my employer allowed me to change my vacation day, so I'll hopefully still get to see it.
Word of warning for those who are going to LAX: there are temporary No Parking signs all along Imperial Ave. for Thursday between 9 AM and 3 PM (I assume those will be changed to Friday now). So you'll have to park somewhere and walk. I'll check tonight, probably, to see if other streets in El Segundo also have signs.

Do we yet know the arrival time at LAX on Friday? It was supposed to be 11AM on Thurs. but Thursday isn't happening anymore so I figure 11AM might not be either. Or do we have to wait on the weather briefing tomorrow mentioned in the NASA announcement?
