There exists a group of fantastically crazy Danish geeks, who are working on getting a human on a suborbital flight above 100 km. In the long run they plan to send a human into orbit and to return him safely.
For this they are basically recreating the Mercury programme, but all on a very small budget, financed by donations of sponsors.
So far they have been building rocket engine working on several principles (N2O / Epoxy hybrid, LOX / Alcohol and the latest a hypergolic test engine running on White Fuming Nitric Acid and Furfuryl Alcohol).
They have built and successfully tested the largest bipropllant liquid engine ever built by amatuers, running on LOX / Ethanol and delivering 65 kN of thrust.
A second team is working on the rockets themselves, including a space capsule with an emergency abort and recovery system and on active attitude control of the rocket.
Their test rockets are not small, they are 5 to 10 meters long and are being launched from a selfbuilt floating launch platform on a Danish Navy artillery range east of the island of Bornholm in the Baltic.
Some of their tests failed, but they are gathering data and are using this to improve the vehicles.
It helps that several members of the 22 heads strong active group are engineers, scientists and tradesmen working in various fields of technology and they see their task as open source project.
They own a well-equipped machine shop on the site of a former shipyard in Copenhagen, where they also built several test stands for static runs of their engines, which they do in a very professional manner, always thinking of safety.
