Boeing has reported receiving the C-40A order:

This looks like the last of the Low Rate Production frames.

Its an ASW platform... since sub warfare isn't the most popular form of combat these days, am I missing other capabilities that drive this to be a popular aircraft?

Does it help with a broader spectrum of naval warfare than just subs?

Maritime surveillance is another major role, along with civil protection duties such as counter-smuggling, EEZ protection, and SAR.

It does. The current P-3 have a broad spectrum of missions aside from those mentioned by ThePointblank.

Remember the P-3 that went down off China? It was on a electronic spying mission.

Remember the P-3 in Pakistan that was destroyed by the "Taliban"? Those were for counter-insurgent warfare.

There are/were P-3's in Afghanistan and Iraq performing ground surveillance to support ground operation.

The P-8A's will do all of these, just a little better.

And in a pinch, you can use the P-8A as a strike/bomber
