Cant wait to see those over head! I will certainly miss those -135's though. Something about looking up and seeing 4 engines overhead is just special to me Big grin

To me that is a shame, because I would love to work those airplanes,(Acft Maint in USAF) but I was raised in Tampa, and personally am not very fond of the area. (I am putting my true feelings for the area VERY mildly)

I am sure they will put them other places as well, I know MacDill wont get all 100 of them.

We are getting up to 32 of the 767's. As for the other 2 bases, if memory serves correct, one was out towards the the Northwest and the other was possibly around North Dakota or that part of the US. Dont quote me though. The news just flashed a map up with no states, just 2 dots on the US, real fast last night when I was half asleep during the story.
I was born and raised and still stuck in TPA. Maybe one day I will escape  Big grin
Its not that bad of a place. A little boring though.

I would think that the USAF would want to establish the new tankers in the Northeast. The reason being, during the latest actions with Iraq almost ALL C-17's, and most C-5's were refueled off the NE coast of the US on there outbound to Europe. C-17's because of there short range (non-ER models), or to avoid a stop in Bangor, ME for fuel. The C-5's because of the heavy loads, and some short runways at the bases cargo was picked up, they simply had to sacrifice fuel to get airborne, and thus required a tanker.

Now I know that the tankers can go TDY, or fly long distances to get to there refueling tracks to perform their services, but we will have a presence in the Middle East for sometime to come, and to me it makes since to have the infrastructure where it is needed.

Thanks SWA TPA,
The one in the Northwest must be Fairchild AFB, WA, in Spokane, and North Dakota must be Grandforks, ND, both are well established tanker bases.

Are the tankers on the west coast flown out of Fairchild or do they come out of McChord?

Yup, there where still lots of 135's on GFK AFB when I was up there.

I wonder if any of the 135's up at Eilson will eventually be replaced?

L-188,

McChord is C-17's now that the C-141 is gone. No Tankers there.

The Tankers are at Fairchild AFB, in Spokane.

I thought Fairchild was B-52's with Tanker support.

L-188,
The B-52's have long ago been moved to just 2 locations in the country, those being, Barksdale AFB, LA, and Minot AFB, ND.

Hope this helps,
Brian
