I know its its a cliché, but the P-51 is my favorite fighter. Twenty minutes ago, I'd have said I was familier with all the varients, but I am pleasantly surprised to find this is not the case. Apparently there is such a thing as an F-6K... a K model that has been equipped for photo recon work.

Thats all well and good, but what exactly was done to the aircraft. I cannot see any changes from a standard D or a K.

Only major difference between a D or a K was the propeller and where it was manufactured; P-51K's used an Aeroproducts propeller in place of the Hamilton Standard propeller, and were built in Dallas, TX. However, most K's were refitted with the Hamilton Standard propeller later on.

Just wondering.....considering the flags denoting "kills" on the side, were these particular photo recon a/c also armed?

Hi Mayor. Yea the F6s were armed, one of the more famous F-6D was (Edit - The Flying Undertaker was his later P-51D not the F-6D. Sorry ) flown by Maj W. Shomo and carried 8 kills. The orignal Frenesi with the 357th FG was a P-51D-5 and was not a photo bird. HTH

I found a picture in Airliners Net that might help you g38
Margaret is a really nice restored F-6D and you can see the camera ports in the side. There was also on under the fues, along the same area as the 2 ports. Also the RAAF had a diferent Photo bubble canopy Mustangs that had a bigger side window. HTH, Darren

There should be a camera port on the side of the fuselage we are looking at. I didnt see them so i think that when this aircraft was restored it was restored to the fighter variant not the recon verson

Here's a great pic showing it was armed (guns and bomb racks) as well as having the camera port at the rear end of the national insignia.
