Some french army budget cutbacks have just been announced. The initial target of 286 Rafale (Armée de l'air + Marine) is now downsized to 225 (about 120 are already in service). Moreover France will likely order some General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper.

That will change as the workers who build the Rafale will protest to the French politicians.

This is the current view until 2018, this does not mean at all that the overall target is set for ever to 225 fighters, otherwise, as stated by KC135, both the workers and the industrial representatives involved would have been very vocal about it since long back.

Additional Rafale orders may actually take place from 2019 and I would not be surprised if that's always been more or less the plan...

Also noted is an an intention to operate 12 A330 MRTT, although as far as I'm aware these haven't been ordered yet.

They probably will. In fact Dassault himself is a politician (a corrupt one) and his son is currently a deputy in the National Assembly.

But the fact is, we need drones more than we need planes, and the French/European drone is late and can't shoot anyway.

Furthermore, there is no money, and unlike the US we can't print money to buy stuff.

New Technology is the name we give to stuff that doesn't work yet. Douglas Adams
