The famous AVG (American Volunteer Group), better known as "The Flying Tigers", were formed in China by American pilots who were allowed to temporarily resign their commissions from the U.S. Military to help the Nationalist Chinese fight the Japanese. This link is to a story which appeared in Life Magazine, and has some very interesting vintage photographs of these men and their planes.
