At the Dubai Air Show, Airbus Military ("Airbus Defense & Space" to be) indicated some sales forecast.

In the Middle-East/North Africa region only 420 ac of various size will need replacement (27 year old on average).
Airbus military expects to capture:
- 145 light transport (CN235-295 class),
- 30 surveillance ac
- 25 MRTT
- 130 A400M

Worldwide, and over 30 years, Airbus Military looks at a market of:
- 915 light transport
- 325 surveillance ac
- 125 MRTT
- 760 A400M (typo?, some sources write only 300)

Nice figures for the share-holders, but as for all predictions.....

CN295 is in the race for Indian Air Force bid to replace 56 x Avro HS748s.

As long as they can source some components from India and fight hard against AN-32, they have very good chance.

Airbus is desperate to sell the A-400M and more A-330MRTTs. The question is do these customers actually need or want that many new aircraft? Another question is will the A-330MRTT and A-400M still be in production or even offered in 30 years?

Boeing is not competing in the IAF tanker program. The only two are the A-330MRTT and the Il-78.

How does the Il-78 stack up against the MRTT?

Not great, other than being an old soviet design, thus being worse for fuel economy, maintenance (four engines), reliability etc, as I understand it, despite being based on an air lifter the Il-78 is not convertible (unlike the newer ones built for the Pakistani air force) as the tanks are built in.

As India is starting to involve itself in more international exercises, having an aircraft that can use commercially available spares will be a big advantage, let alone one that can take the base personal and cargo with it, and less likely to break down.
About the only advantage the Il-78 will have is personnel already trained on it, and its field performance.

In terms of pure fuel offload ability, the MRTT-330 wins this one easily too! Also remember the IAF has picked up some C-17's, along with the C-130's, so having a boom equipped aircraft will be an advantage (having said that....did the IAF request a boom?)

The current Il-78s in IAF's fleet share commonality with its Il-76. That is one other advantage of Il-76. IAF, after detailed study, selected A330-MRTT as they had lower TCO, even though their initial cost was higher than Il-76. For this reason, the finance ministry had pushed back the IAF's selection of A330-MRTT once asking for more details. IAF has now provided it, and the approval is imminent.

Though with economy doing worse than expected this year, whether India will sign the agreement this fiscal year is a bit doubtful. Elections are scheduled for May 2014. So if the deal isn't inked in the next couple of months, it will probably be on hold till the elections are over and the next government is sworn in.
