Had the pleasure of attending one of the behind the scenes tours at the NMUSAF this week. The Memphis Belle work continues, with major sections still removed to treat corrosion. The museum plans on putting her on display in the fourth quarter of 2014, which means she'll have her era correct paint scheme applied, but not completely finished (I suspect her outward appearance will look complete, with the interior restoration work still ongoing when she arrives at the main museum complex). They still do not know where they are going to display her in the museum since they will be giving the Smithsonian the Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby (B-17G). They also plan on making the Swoose (B-17D) the priority restoration when they are finished with the Belle (which is considered more historically important than the Belle, and a lot less vandalized which should lessen her restoration time). The most interesting thing I got from the tour, however, was during their research of the ball turret restoration, that the B-17G on display at the AMC museum in Dover contained a B-24 ball turret. The two museums essentially traded a set of ball turrets so that the B-24D on display at the NMUSAF could finally have a ball turret installed. I highly recommend anyone traveling through the Dayton area on a Friday to take this tour if you have the chance.

(From Wiki) USAAF 40-3097, that saw extensive use in the Southwest Pacific theatre of World War II and survived to become the oldest B-17 still intact. It is the only early "shark fin" B-17 known to exist, and the only surviving B-17 to have seen action in the 1941-42 Philippines Campaign, the first day of the United States entry into the war.
Lots of interesting history regarding the Swoose....
- flew early combat missions
- it's actually the remains of two damaged airframes hence the name: swan + goose = Swoose
- only survived the war due to its use as a VIP transport. Lots of well known folks, including LBJ, flew aboard her.
