I was reading an article on MSN today about armor and US Military vehicles, and they listed costs and quantities of fighters on order, and I didn't recognize the F-35. Is it the new JSF?

F-35 is the winner of the JSF compo. The shootout was between Boeing and Lockheed. Lockheed won, partly because they could show off vertical take-off, supersonic flight and vertical landing on the same flight without stripping parts off the prototype.
The F-35 will come in several versions for US Navy, US Air Force, US Marines, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The Marine and UK versions will be vertical takeoff. It will replace the F-16 and A-10 (USAF), the AV-8B and F/A-18 (USMC) and the Sea HArrier & Harrier GR-7 (RN/RAF)
